“Call me, STAT! This is Dennis”

Well, that’s one way to find out you are on Sarah Palin’s enemies list. Yesterday morning, while working on my Shanta Claus projects and prepping for my television show, Dennis Zaki called. He and Jesse Gryphen of the Immoral Minority, had driven to Sarah Palin’s Wasilla book signing. Why? Well, it’s like storm chasers in Nebraska…only they’re train-wreck chasers. Me? Well, I’m busy these days and have had Palin fatigue since before most people have even heard of her.

Don’t get me wrong…Thanks Sarah! It’s just that I really wasn’t interested. Two weeks ago, I had press privileges at her book signing at Elmendorf AFB that was closed to the public. On that day, I was busy figuring out if my hair was oily, normal or dry. Truth be told, I’m just not that into her.

Dennis and I have been friends since the Corrupt Bastards Club Trials. He’s one of my favorite Hardy Boys. I met Gryph last year; we fight about half the time…the rest we spend laughing. I’ll ask Sarah Palin to sign my copy of Going Rogue after it wins the National Book Award for best fiction…it’s richly deserving. Besides, I’m having the “Under the Bus” folks sign it instead; John Bitney, Anne Kilkenny, Andrew Halcro, Lyda Green, Walt Monegan, Trooper Wooten, etc. It’s just more honest.

Gryphen and Zaki were booted from the event. My name was on the list to boot if I showed. There’s a fourth unknown and unwelcomed guest..who could it be? Oh, yeah, fellas…the troops are fighting for Palin’s right to ban us from a public event!

When the Anchorage Daily News reported on the “Homecoming” event for Palin with the “flocking” of 750 people to the “public” event at the publicly funded Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center with the publicly funded Wasilla Police Officers working security, they made a tiny mention of the bumped bloggers. Nearly 2,000 people showed up for an indoor football game earlier this year at the same complex. Twice as many citizens of Wasilla have become members of the Mat Su Valley Sportsman’s Association as showed up for Sarah Palin’s glorious homecoming. In “Real America” Palin attracted thousands of teabaggers. In “Real Alaska,” the tea bagger capitol and Palin’s hometown, there were more people shopping at Wal*Mart.

The ADN also failed to mention that H1N1 virus vaccines were also being administered at the same time as the book signing. Good Lord, if only there were a vaccine for Palin’s word salad.

Whoopie Flippin’ Doooo! Hell of a homecoming, did she get another crown?

You could find out what Alaskans really think of Sarah coming home judging by the comments on the Anchorage Daily News website…Oh wait…the ADN decided to ban public comments on the article.

Dennis Zaki, Linda Kellen-Biegel, Jeanne Devon and myself all passed the White House Security checks to attend the “closed to the public”troops only speech by President Obama a few weeks ago. The only threat to Sarah Palin by the Alaska Bloggers is the truth. Yes, it’s scary.

I guess “Real Alaskans” aren’t allowed near an “author” who once asked a librarian if she’d ban books. Oh, the irony…or is it ion-ry…either way, I’ve been Palibanned!

Anchorage Assembly Chairwoman, Debbie Ossiander, YOU’RE FIRED!

Tonight’s assembly meeting hit a full tilt when the so called “Socialist Six” removed a member of the “Fascist Five” as their chair.

It’s so difficult for me…you have no idea. Oh, wait for it…no, it’s about damn time. Debbie Ossiander has behaved like the awkward girl in high school who got to sit with the jocks at lunchtime because she kept their water bottles full and cleared the lunch trays. Please know this comparison has nothing to do with the physical appearance of Ms.Ossiander, but rather her pathetic and pandering perfomance.

During the much debated Ordinance 64 that sucked up much of our summer, Ossiander allowed bus loads of Wasilla-billies to testify their hate against the GLBT citizens of Anchorage. Ordinance 64 would have added those citizens to an already existing protection to prevent discrimination in housing, education and employment. Ironically, already provided protection; Religion. The “Red Shirts” vs. “Blue Shirts” found sympathy in the red wearing chair. When the ordinance passed, Debbie Ossiander could have been the over-riding vote to new Mayor Dan Sullivan’s veto.

Weeks and weeks of bad behavior and a witch hunt on former mayor, Senator Mark Begich were tolerated by the chair. Bill Starr and Dan Coffey are consummate bullies.

Anchorage has lost a great public servant with the retirement of Bart Mauldin, the MOA Purchasing Officer. His service was lauded tonight and he left to a standing ovation. As one assembly member told me, “they are dropping like flies.” No one wants to stay on with a mayor running for Senate 2014.

The mayor is refusing to fully fund the city and running for Grinch by laying off 60 city employees. He has made his choice, and by the time the citizens of Anchorage are standing in the voting booths in a few years, they will make theirs.

Debbie Ossiander doesn’t leave the chair without a legacy. She could have taken a stand against hate. She didn’t. If you think I exagerate with the word “hate”…watch this…see if you have a better word.

There’s a chance to redeem herself, Debbie Ossiander could vote to over-ride the mayor’s budget veto. I hope she does the right thing.

New Chair Patrick Flynn and Vice Chair Mike Gutierrez were elected by secret ballot and will hopefully bring some civility back to an assembly in much need.

This week’s show was all about FISH and the slow rationalization-read PRIVATIZATION of that resource. In fact, fisheries are the only resource in the United States that is privatized! This week, my guests were:

Dr. Carol Ann Woody is a USGS Fishery Biologist based at the Alaska Science Center in Anchorage. Dr. Woody specializes in evolutionary ecology of fishes, conservation biology, predator/prey co-evolutionary relationships, molecular genetics, resource selection modeling and wildlife ecology. She is a past president of the Alaska Chapter of the American Fisheries Society.

Shawn Dochtermann is a 30 year commercial fisherman. When not fishing, he serves as vice president of the Alaska Jig Association and Secretary of the Crewmen’s Association based in Kodiak. Shawn is a member of the Alaska Independent Fisheries Marketing Association-a Bristol Bay salmon advocacy group.

Tim Smith is a commercial fisherman, Biologist and pilot. He is president of Nome Fishermen Association.

And joining us in segment 4, is Stephen Taufen. Stephen is a former high level corporate accountant, heroic whistle blower and founder of the Groundswell Fisheries Movement.

RESPONSE TO DAN SULLIVAN’S COMPASS PIECE, December 8, 2009

Why is Dan Sullivan not telling the Truth about his budget, the cost of government and the financial condition of our City? I will deal with that question after I cast light on the Mayor playing fast and loose with the facts.

Contrary to Sullivan’s assertion, the budget that was approved by the Assembly last year did match current revenues, to do otherwise would be illegal and Mr. Sullivan knows it. The comments he made in today’s (12/8/09) Anchorage Daily News are tantamount to a criminal accusation, and he should apologize! When revenues posted a decline in January, adjustments were made to the budget by Acting Mayor Claman that included millions in ‘give backs’ by the unions. What had been a $17 M shortfall was reduced significantly to a $9 M deficit by the time Dan Sullivan took office in July. Thank you, Acting Mayor Claman. In September the Mayor announced that $5 Million of the remaining deficit disappeared because of the improved performance of the Stock Market, which has risen 3,500 points since the passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Thank you, Barack Obama and the Democrats in Congress. By the 3rd Q of this fiscal year the financial condition of the City has improved significantly. How much? We won’t know until the Sullivan Administration books them and then without a doubt, Dan Sullivan will become a paper “hero” to his uninformed supporters. These revenues will not appear until AFTER this ’smoke and mirrors’ budget passes, which it certainly will. Folks, the only ‘deficit’ is the one caused by Dan Sullivan through his refusal to fully fund the budget. Sullivan’s budget is over $10 M UNDER the tax cap. Dan can’t blame THAT on the Assembly.

So why is Dan Sullivan is not telling the truth about his budget and the financial condition of the City? Because he wants to do three things: he wants to attack employee bargaining units, he wants to reward his wealthiest supporters with tax cuts and he wants to strip our government of its ability to rationally regulate and manage growth and development, which offends Mr. Sullivan’s philosophy of laissez faire capitalism. Sullivan wants a KABATA-friendly AMATS, compliant community councils and a ‘hear no evil’ planning and zoning body.

What kind of vision is contained in the Dan Sullivan budget? A vision based on fear and regressive policy. That is not the vision I want guiding Anchorage into the second decade of the 21st Century.

“In It To Win It”? Like a BASKETBALL GAME?

President Obama spoke this evening about his decision to build up troops in Afghanistan. Not a big shocker, he’d promised as much while campaigning. Neato with the change! I’m thinking Afghanistan is the new Vietnam and BHO became LBJ in pretty short order. I can only imagine the champagne corks popping at Blackwater & Co. tonight.

Well, Princess Palin of Facebook has spoken…she’s pretty sure she had something to do with his decision. Once again, a shocking bout of Reality Deficit Disorder.

Finally, A Decision for Afghanistan: We’re In It to Win It

Three months ago, I joined a number of Americans in urging President Obama to provide the resources necessary to achieve our goals in Afghanistan. Tonight, I am glad he mostly heeded that advice.

Right, the President was taking your advice…right. No wonder I disagree with it. By “we’re in it” do you mean you and Obama? That’s weird…are you ready to pal around with him now?

At long last, President Obama decided to give his military commanders much of what they need to accomplish their mission in Afghanistan. In the end, he decided to endorse a “surge” for Afghanistan, applying the counterinsurgency principles of “clear, hold and build” that worked so well in Iraq. Given that he opposed the surge in Iraq, it is even more welcome that he now supports a surge in Afghanistan.

“At long last”? Because he’s been jacking around on a ranch all these months? “Worked so well in Iraq”? OK, put down the Red Bull and eat a crouton…it will help. The only surge GWB had that was productive resulted in the birth of twins. SURGE MEANS MORE DEAD PEOPLE.

This approach means, as Senator John McCain has noted, that “We now have an opportunity to build a bipartisan consensus in support of a vital national security priority: defeating Al-Qaeda and its violent extremist allies in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and ensuring that these countries never again serve as bases for terrorist attacks against America and our allies.”

John McCain. Really? Do you think after seeing you turkey trot around the country on your Quitstock Tour that ANYONE thinks John McCain has the judgment of a turnip? Didn’t he say he was OK with 10,000 years of war?! Thanks, but no thanks.

We should be clear, however, that fewer troops mean assuming more risk. Talk of an exit date also risks sending the wrong message. We should be in Afghanistan to win, not to set a timetable for withdrawal that signals a lack of resolve to our friends, and lets our enemies believe they can wait us out. As long as we’re in to win, and as long as troop level decisions are based on conditions on the ground and the advice of our military commanders, I support President Obama’s decision.

Levi Johnston’s Thanksgiving…

Right after Palin’s appearance on Oprah, I was a guest on Ron Reagan Jr’s radio show. I had joked that I had a better chance of having Thanksgiving with Levi Johnston than she did. I wasn’t sure what to say when I was invited a few weeks ago.

My day was full of my family and fixings…and a few hours at the home of Rex Butler. Here a few pictures. I promised not to write what we talked about. Entertainment Tonight was filming, but when the cameras were off, so were the brakes.

Catch my interview with Tank Jones on Moore Up North, Saturday 4pm on KYES Channel 5. He made me blush more than once and explained “swagger.”

I keep getting that “an eye for an eye leaves everyone blind” sort of feeling…

Palin Aborts Book Signing: Updated

Sarah Palin’s “The Bigger the Hair, The Closer to God Tour” hit a “bumpit” in the road. At a book signing at Borders in Noblesville, Indiana, she abruptly quit her book signing, leaving about 300 families with unsigned books. They didn’t like it one bit…shouting “quitter”. Really? You think she’s a quitter? Welcome to our world. Here is a link to a local Noblesville newsclip. Good thing they didn’t have torches and pitchforks…

How horrific. Palin quit a book signing. Apparently, it takes a personal stiffing from Sarah Palin for the Paliban to see the light. Amen! Maybe they should have looked at her documented trail of flake-out before camping overnight in freezing temperatures and forking over $28.99 for her book of fiction. The only thing that’s gone “rogue” is the truth.

Welcome to reality Paliban!

I’ve been told that yesterday there were supporters in Noblesville who stood in long lines for hours in the cold and rain, and the book signing event ended without a chance to say hello to everyone who showed up. I am so sorry. We are working on a solution for those who were left behind.

Mayor Sully’s Waah-Waah Moment

: Watch Those Hands, Mayor Family Values!

After weeks of witch hunting, the Sullivan Administration has released the Wheeler report. Mayor Sullivan has been whining about the budget, the unions and Mark Begich since…well…seventh grade. OK, that’s an exaggeration, but since taking the helm of Anchorage, he has talked of little else.

If the city is in such financial disarray from the previous administration, why did Dan Sullivan take a mayoral paycheck for the weeks BEFORE he was mayor? Matt Claman was already being paid to be the acting mayor. Because of Sully, the good taxpayers of Anchorage had to cough up an extra $12,115.20. There is no record of any mayor EVER taking a paycheck between election certification and the swearing-in ceremony. The legal loophole Sullivan took advantage of ought to be closed.

Last week, Mayor Sullivan was shamed into showing up for President Obama’s first ever stop in Alaska. The mayor selfishly turned down 10 tickets he could have and should have distributed. Later, Sully said, while calling in to a local right-wing talk show, that he had to ”watch his wallet” because he’d gone to see the president. I don’t know if the mayor was worried because the president is a black man, a ”socialist” or more likely, a black “socialist”. If anything, it’s the Anchorage taxpayers that have to ”watch our wallets” when Sully’s in the house. How much money did the unnecessary fishing expedition that is the Wheeler report cost? The only thing Sully and Wheeler caught were a bunch of suckers-i.e. the Anchorage taxpayers.

Mayor Sullivan claims to be concerned with the financial straits the city is in. If that’s true, instead of spending time and taxpayer funds pointing fingers, he should man-up, put his money where his mouth is and give his $12,115.20 interim paycheck back.

That would be the honorable thing to do. But, instead of being accountable, Sully has relentlessly, maliciously and pointlessly attempted to scapegoat Senator Mark Begich. Perhaps the mayor ought to take a page out of the senator’s playbook: stop complaining and just get to work.

There are other ways of demonstrating concern and accountability. If the Borough of Anchorage is in financial ruin, why doesn’t Mayor Sullivan do what nearly every other city administration has done and tax to the cap? Instead, Sullivan decided to play political games with real people’s lives in a shameless display of politics and simultaneous self-promotion.

Dan Sullivan has an additional $10 million dollars that would fully fund the municipality. But Sully and his have theirs. They aren’t concerned with the little people; little people who depend upon bus schedules, libraries and emergency services-life and death matters that are measured in precious minutes. Minutes that can never be traded for once they are lost. Minutes that matter when a loved one’s had a heart attack and the closest fire station is closed-closed because Dan Sullivan would rather cut emergency services than access $10 million in available funds.

Dan Sullivan must submit a budget that allows full funding of the municipality. Only then can his “concern” be taken seriously. But Sully would rather put the “I cut taxes” feather in his cap-essential services be damned. By not fully funding the city and utilizing the available funds, the city will be even more hard pressed the next fiscal year as the tax cap will adjust downward-in other words, next year, we won’t have a $10 million dollar potential cushion; it will evaporate with essential services and municipal jobs.

There has been a lot of shrapnel and fallout from the erupting war between the left and right factions of city government. As a result, civility was one of the first casualties of the Sullivan Administration. Some Anchorage Assembly members have behaved in ways that would get your children suspended from school. They have exhausted every means possible to demonize Senator Mark Begich and the unions-the unions that represent the men and women that get the power grid up when it’s the middle of the night and 20 below; the unions that represent the men and women who respond at a moments notice and provide life-saving care and comfort in your hour of need; the unions that represent the men and women who put their lives on the line day in and day out to protect and serve. To the Republicans, the Firemen and Policemen are nothing more than election cycle props. They don’t want to honor their tremendous sacrifice and pay them a living wage. When you hear the local radio jocks regurgitate those right-wing talking points about “the unions”, notice how they NEVER mention WHO it is those unions are representing! That’s because they want it both ways. They want to shake the fireman’s hand while stabbing his union in the back.

According to the Wheeler report, it is important to note that former Mayor Mark Begich DID NOT violate the city charter. AND, the union contracts that have been under constant fire are VALID and PERFECTLY LEGAL!

“It comes as no surprise that the report issued by Municipal Attorney Dennis Wheeler is
critical of me and my administration. We should not pretend that this review of the facts was objective, fair or complete. The Sullivan Administration, in concert with a handful of Assembly members, is determined to tarnish the record of my administration and this is just the latest step in that effort. “I cooperated with the Municipal Attorney, provided documents showing information the Assembly had about the state of city finances in 2008 and throughout my tenure as mayor, and supplied facts and information to put those documents in context. I sent Mr. Wheeler several letters inviting him to submit any additional questions he had, but it wasn’t until Nov. 12 – after receiving my fourth such letter and three days before he released his report – that any questions were submitted. I promptly answered those questions (see attachment).

“As I have said since day one, the Anchorage Assembly was fully apprised of all
financial information related to the Municipality throughout my terms as mayor. The suggestion that the Assembly was not fully informed about the Municipality’s financial condition is absurd and totally at odds with the record. We held multiple work sessions, issued reports and memos, and fully answered all questions. I could not, however, hold their collective hand to make sure they retained and analyzed the information provided. I think what we’ve seen is the result of an Assembly that eliminated its own budget analyst office and then was unable to keep up with the job they were elected to do. It’s regrettable that some have tried to gain political advantage calling into question labor contracts that were vigorously negotiated and contained terms that were fair, both to the Municipality and to the police officers and fire fighters who put their lives on the line for us every day.
“When I was elected mayor in 2003 and inherited a $33 million budget gap, I didn’t
complain about the previous administration. We got to work, closed the gap and pulled the city together. I would urge the Sullivan Administration and the Anchorage Assembly to stop trying to divide the community, deal with the budget challenges they face, and put the citizens of Anchorage above political games.
