When the Democrats were parading their top candidates for the next President of the United States of America , I was secretly disappointed. I had hoped for a particular person to run this year that had it all; she had executive experience, was diplomatic, fiscally successful, intelligent, compassionate and articulate. Oprah! However, it boiled down to an historic choice between an African American man and an entrenched Caucasian woman.

Sarah Palin’s arrival on the John McCain ticket caught the country by surprise. I think Steven Colbert put it, “Who the F&*@ is Sarah Palin?” I don’t need Oprah Winfrey to tell me who Sarah is, but I’m in rare company. Now, a manufactured controversy surrounding Oprah NOT having Sarah on her show is brewing courtesy of FOXNEWS. I was asked to be a guest on Geraldo last week. The producer wanted to know what I thought of Sarah Palin’s policy. Did I think Palin was qualified to have the 2nd most important job in the world? Did I like her? Then on Saturday, the producer called me to confirm the segment time and asked what I thought of Oprah refusing to have Sarah Palin on her show. He seemed to think Palin was getting dissed since Obama had been on her show. And, by the way, what did I think? The Oprah Show had apparently announced they would not have Sarah Palin on before the election. And now, Geraldo is on the warpath. When asked on live television before millions of viewers on Geraldo’s show, I told him the show was Oprah’s and that was entirely her decision. Oprah knows there is no exit strategy if she interviews Palin. Winfrey has already endorsed Obama, then campaigned for him. If hard questions are asked, which is Oprah’s style, she will be called “a mouth piece for Obama”, too tough, vindictive, sexist, etc. If she only asks Sarah about motherhood and igloos, she be accused of pandering, and treating Sarah like she is a “Wasillabilly” who only reads books with pictures. Who wins? Oprah. Oprah wins for having the forward thought not to become chum in media shark tank. Let’s stick to the REAL issues and NOT the MANUFACTURED ones.

  1. Isn’t it amazing how things get twisted for so many by so few. Nice voice of reason, Shannyn. Saw you on Geraldo. I kept waiting for meaty questions that did not materialize. A voice of honestly a reason, now thats American.

  2. there were exactly my thoughts about oprah’s decision — she won’t win for losing with the gop if she had sarah on: she would be accused of the worst bias if she asked any questions about family values, experience, the bridge to nowhere, environment, etc. and then, if she only asked the soft “mommy and children” questions, she would be accused of being sexist. best to leave it alone. i support oprah’s decision and commend you for your insight.

  3. I completely agree. I posted on my blog the other day about the way that republicans are branding Oprah for ignoring this “historic first” … as if Geraldine Ferraro never existed! The NY Times was irresponsible in the way they presented this topic.

  4. HA HA…I thought I was being so original with my coining the phrase “Wasillybillies” around here…close enough I guess.
Come listen to my story ’bout a man named Todd…you guys can finish with your own lyrics from there.

  5. Help end the Iraq war and more.

Please make these 4 toll free phone calls and get as many people as you can to make these calls today to get the following progressive legislation enacted.

Call GOP contributor and war contractor General Electric Corporation at 800 386 1215 and tell the person, that you want the GE CEO to get Bush to end the war in Iraq and then Bush resign with Cheney and until that happens you will not buy any GE products and that you will tell your friends. Then call a local appliance store that sells GE products and tell the person you will not buy any GE products from their store until they can convince the GE CEO to convince George W Bush to end the war.

Call GOP contributor Rite Aid Pharmacies at 800 325 3737 and tell the person that you want the Rite Aid CEO to get congress and the President to enact HR 676 single payer universal health care and repeal Medicare Part D and place the drug benefit in Medicare Part B covering 80% of the cost of drugs with no extra premiums, no extra deductibles, no means tests, no coverage gaps, and remove the means test for Medicare Part B and until that happens, you won’t buy ANYTHING from Rite Aid.

Call GOP contributor Wendy’s restaurants at 800 443 7266 and tell the person in that you want their CEO to get congress and the President to enact a $10/HR MIN. WAGE into law and until this happens you will not go to a Wendy’s Restaurant.

Call your local Exxon/Mobil station and tell the manager that you will not get your car repaired there, nor will you buy gas there until their parent company sets their price so that they can sell you gas for $1.75 a gallon. Then only do business with other gas stations.

Copy the above text and send it to your friends by email and to other democrats and thoughtful independents.

  6. I live in NY. I did not vote for Hillary because to me Hillary appears a conservative. She boasted about how she would not have government run the new health care system she would implement.

I originally supported Edwards but when Barack Obama and Hillary led the field, I voted for Barack Obama in the NY primary.

Barack does not appear as progressive as John Edwards or Dennis Kucinich but I can support Senator Obama enthusiastically. If you see the previous comment I have a plan to take the political fight to some of the most well known GOP contributors and demand the legislation from them, or they will lose a lot of business from people who call them. That’s what it has come to. We have to take the fight to companies that have corrupted the legislative process. Consider it a national citizens initiative.
