Palin Blames Bloggers For W.A.R. Loss

In an interview with the Juneau Empire, Governor Sarah Palin blamed the lies of the blogosphere and e-mails from members of the public (also known as constituent voices) for the defeat of Wayne Anthony Ross for Attorney General.

The vote was the first in state history to defeat an AG appointee and went down 35-23 last Thursday. Not only was Ross the first AG to not be confirmed, according to Legislative Research Services, it was the first time in state history a head of a state agency has failed to be confirmed by the Legislature. At the time of the vote, Palin was pandering, attending an anti-choice fundraiser in Indiana.

“A great problem was public lies were told about Mr. Ross,” Palin told the Juneau Empire.

The one example she cited was “he being engaged in a machine gun shoot on somebody’s property down in Seward, and there were witnesses to such a thing, and he’d never been there,” she said. “That’s just one example.”

It is true the Alaska blogosphere was rabid about the nomination of Wayne Anthony Ross. The example she cited DOES NOT EXIST.

Palin was referring to a fundraiser held by Congressman Don Young last August in Seward, Alaska. It was the second such fundraiser that included machine guns, targets, dry bombs, turkey, potato salad and s’mores. A Seward resident mentioned the swans in the swamp not being quite the same. Wayne Anthony Ross’s name was not mentioned. This allegation was never brought up during the judiciary process.

Feeling like an endangered species, Alaska progressives are tight. The Alaska Bloggers are tighter. Right after the nomination of Sarah Palin for VP, Wasilla blogger, musician, professor, and all around renaissance man, Phil Munger, threw a party at his home-the first of many. Secrecies were sworn; we were not alone in front of our computers-we had each other; Mudflats, Immoral Minority, Writing Raven, Celtic Diva, Progressive Alaska, Alaska Report, What Do I Know, and myself, Just a Girl From Homer. Documentary crews interviewed us and protected anonymous identities at the time.

What we were going up against was so much bigger than any one of us. We’d email or call each other daily. We’d comment on each other’s blogs. We shared a community and a desire to make Alaska better. We told each other when we were wrong.

As a group, we’re like herding cats. But Sarah Palin is right; we made a difference. As proud as I am of my fellow Alaskan activists, we didn’t defeat her attorney general nomination. She did. Sarah Palin chose an unqualified candidate and then left him to sink his own ship.

The collective effort to defeat W.A.R. was fierce.

The Leah Burton letter went viral. Her testimony of Ross’s statement “If you can’t rape your wife, who are you gonna rape?” stood firm. It went into the record and she held up under cross examination by the legislators.

The Alaska Federation of Natives has considered Ross an enemy for decades. He had no defense.

His vile phobic reaction to the rights of gay and lesbian Alaskans, likening them to lima beans, demonstrated he was clearly not qualified for the job. When given the opportunity to repudiate unambiguous bigoted anti-gay statements, Ross refused.

Wayne Anthony Ross lied to the legislature in the last hours before his nomination and got caught. Sean Cockerham, reporter for the Anchorage Daily News, posted the tape of Ross which contradicted his written denial; we bloggers reported it, hardly making it our fault.

I was waiting to hear who would be faulted for the largest political defeat in Alaska history, short of an election. Who would Sarah blame? Mudflats, Diva and I speculated last Thursday at a “victory dinner.” We knew it wouldn’t be W.A.R. or herself.

When it comes to taking responsibility for her failures, Sarah Palin is George W. Bush with lipstick; nothing is ever her fault.

Troopergate was her brother-in-law’s fault. Walt Monegan was a rogue commissioner. Her pro-Pebble Mine stance during a contentious election was the fault of a “Governor’s hat” wardrobe malfunction. Her criticisms when her witch hunting, governor-anointing pastor, Pastor Muthee, was exposed, were the fault of people who hate Jesus. Her failed interviews were Katie Couric’s and Charlie Gibson’s fault. Her exorbitant wardrobe was the RNC’s fault. Her charging the state per diem to sleep in her own bed and flying her family around the country at state expense weren’t her fault. Her daughter’s problems are Levi’s fault. Her VP political loss was John McCain’s fault. Her image problems are Tina Fey’s fault. Turkeygate was the cameraman’s fault. Her policy on aerial wolf hunting was Ashley Judd’s and Outsiders’ fault. The empty Juneau Senate seat wasn’t on her, it was the Senate Democrats’ fault.

Whose fault was it that W.A.R. was rejected?lipstick-large1
Whose fault was it that your bills failed in Juneau?
Whose fault was it that you didn’t sign SB89 supporting WWII troops?
Whose fault was it rural Alaska was damn near starving this winter?

The Alaska bloggers?

No, Governor Palin, your losses are your fault.

  1. Shannyn,
It isn’t just the first time an Attorney General was not confirmed. It is the first time ANY Commissioner was turned away by the Legislature.

  2. Shannyn … you sound PISSED! Rightfully so. Excellent post. I love it.

  3. Shannyn, this is a very strongly written post – absolutely riveting.

You make a very compelling case for Sarah’s pattern of refusing to accept responsibility for anything that goes wrong.

I already knew all the pieces, but seeing it all at once just reinforces how completely unprofessional this Governor is.

  4. Don’t forget Kenai Peninsula conservative Republican Senator, Tom Wagoner. He denounced Mr. Ross from the floor as a liar and campaign trickster, before voting no.

  5. Actually, there was a machine gun shoot “fundraiser” in Seward in 2006 involving WARthog. It was mentioned in the Alaska Report back in August, 2008. Maybe nobody noticed it at the time, but there it was as part of the reporting on the 2008 event:

Also appeared in the other Seward paper.

“The first, at the same Nash Road property in 2006, featured Wayne Anthony Ross, former gubernatorial candidate and board member of the National Rifle Association.” From the second paragraph of the Alaska Report article.

    • Dorene M. Lorenz, former Channel 11 News reporter who is the actual sponsor of the Alaska Hamptons Turkey Shoot here. Trying to keep it real for Phil Munger, since Ethan briefly introduced me to him at Cafe del Mundo a couple weeks ago, and appreciate his enjoyment of “providing ACCURATE information where it isn’t being provided.”

The Seward City News, Seward Phoenix Log, and Alaska Report articles on the Turkey Shoot were all written by the same person, Russ Stigall. Mr. Stigall didn’t bother going the event or interviewing anyone who did.

Plainly put, Wayne Anthony Ross was not in attendance. I don’t know him, so I didn’t invite him. No one in attendance remotely resembled WAR in physicality or attitude. No one in attendance drove a Hummer. There was no opportunity for mistaken identity.

The rest of Mr. Stigall’s reporting on the event is equally as accurate.

      Warm regards,

      Dorene M. Lorenz
      **********NOTE FROM SHANNYN**********
Dorene, the point was there was no testimony about Mr. Ross and the Don Young fundraiser. No blogs covered that during the process of approving the AG. Palin didn’t talk about all the other allegations…because she couldn’t. I know W.A.R. owns hundreds of guns, and his NRA stance is hardly a deterrent for Alaskans, it wasn’t a reason to vote no on his appointment.

  6. Granted, this was NOT an issue brought forward by bloggers… but it was “out there”.

  7. You are so GOOD when you are PISSED!

  8. Powerful post, Shannyn! And more power to the bloggers — not only the Alaska progressives, but everyone in the progressive blogger community across the globe.

  9. I once had a grandmother who griped about everything. She was never pleased or happy. We had a family saying the when she got happy it would be her final days. On the same idea, perhaps we should watch for a “mea culpa” from SP and run for the hills.

  10. great post, Shannyn!!

  11. Just so you know, there is someone trashing you on another blog. It upset me so much, I didn’t know if I should tell you. But..I thought about it and if it were me, I would want to know. Look at the blog Hypocrites and Heffalump Tramps. Not the blogger-one of the writers who is a real jerk!! I did not know how to get this to you except this way.
I think you do a great job Shannyn! Don’t let anyone ever stop you…..
    **********NOTE FROM SHANNYN**********
Thanks for the heads up. It’s not rare…they don’t want to talk about the message, just the messenger.

  12. Brilliant writing that we need to see more of in the lower 48. The truth about Palin’s form of governance needs to be shouted from the rooftops because many of her supporters are still crediting her with an 80% approval in her home state.

I’m an independent voter who is indeed frightened about her popularity and angry at McCain for unleashing her on the country. To me she’s like the evil genie that’s been released from the bottle. I’m not talking “I Dream Of Genie” or Disney’s Aladdin’s charming djinn; I’m talking the real deal from ancient lore. Genies were often beautiful and exciting with promises of great fortune bestowed on the master. But wait…these genies were out for their own interests and cared nothing about the needs of the master. And even though the genie is meant to serve the master, they are really looking to trick the master and gain their freedom. Once free, their desire is to gain as much power as possible then selfishly serve themselves and only themselves. Alas, once a genie’s bottle has been uncorked, it is very difficult to force the genie back inside.

  13. Great post – and thanks problem child for posting the machine gun article that was posted in the Seward Paper for the 2006 one that Wayne A. Ross DID participate in that no one knew about and that was never mentioned.

SP is a FOUNT of information isn’t she? She just shoots off right and left – oops.

  14. Seriously, is something wrong with Palin’s mental health?

Her repeated unusual behavior suggests that there could be a problem.

  15. Congratulations to the Liberal Bloggers then. Power to the people!

  16. Another good article and hopefully further evidence that the political career of Bimbo Barbi is coming to an end.

  17. Two very strong essays on this today – yours and AKM’s. Thanks for the kind words.

You might have added that we all got packets sent to us this morning from a person trying to disclose identities of important anonymous people affiliated with SarahPac and Conservatives4Palin. Linda (Celtic Diva) has written about it.

We have no desire to “out” these conservatives who might lose their jobs or become objects of some action or another.

We blog because we enjoy providing ACCURATE information where it isn’t being provided.

Readers should note that so far, the Alaska mainstream media is uninterested in asking us how we feel about being lied about – once more – by our Governor.

Anyone can google the Ross Machine Gun bullshit, and realize no Alaska blogger did what Palin has accused us of. Nor has the Alaska press yet addressed the minor but important role the team Shannyn referenced above played in the siege of WAR.

And it wasn’t just us progressives who helped. Andrew Halcro has been effective, and we sometimes include him in the correspondence loop.

  18. Excellent post, Shannyn!!

Wholeheartedly agree with what Rob D said: “I already knew all the pieces, but seeing it all at once just reinforces how completely unprofessional this Governor is.” (I have to wonder what pieces we’ve simply already forgotten about due to the sheer number of “pieces” GINO has left laying in her wake …)

From the Juneau Empire piece: “Rep. Cathy Muñoz, R-Juneau, eventually voted to confirm Ross, but said those last days before the vote led her to reconsider her promise to Palin to back Ross.” I’m not at all familiar with who Cathy Muñoz is, but have to wonder what she managed to get out of this particular deal … sounds as though she’d had some serious doubts about Mr. Ross.

  19. Great post Shannyn. You summed it all up nicely.

Reminds me of a comment I made some weeks ago.

“one of these days Palin will tell the truth, and have to talk herself out of it”.

  20. Ok, the morphed picture of she and her twin is scary. I just hadda say that.

Otherwise, you are right on the money here. Fury and all!

  21. MadCityKaren–she’s the new (R) Rep. for the Juneau Valley district. She nearly ran on the “platform” that she’s such good friends with SP that she’d be able to get her to be nicer to Juneau and not do things like try to move the Capital and such. How’s that workin’ out for ya’, CM?

  22. I worked in a VA psychiatric clinic for a number of years. While not a medical professional I became interested in the causes/symptoms of various mental maladies during my time working there. It’s been pointed out before that Palin is a walking, talking definition of narcissistic personality disorder(NPD). She is, quite literally, a textbook case. If you doubt it go to a well stocked library and look up NPD in the DSM IV. (I happen to have my own copy. Tres bizzare, no?) Anyway, if you want to skip all the medical-ese then wikipedia has a nice easy to understand lay description of NPD at:

So folks, it’s once again NOT Sarah’s fault. It’s that pesky NPD. Spooky to think that this braincase got anywhere near the Whitehouse.

Like bipolar disorder, OCD, schizophrenia, etc., NPD is a mental illness. And I really would feel a large amount of sympathy for her and her family if she wasn’t trying so hard to ruin my beloved Alaska with her insanity.

  23. The rejection of W.A.R. was a group effort, and I am proud to have been a participant!

  24. While this is all very amusing, there is something that should stick in the mind.

This is the kind of argument put forth to destroy network neutrality. Ok. Not the argument. But the reason behind it. The right would like nothing better than to control the internet. Then they’d be able to shut down blogs, slow down access to sites they don’t want people to access, erase information, etc. When AT&T or some other entity talks about controling the flow of traffic or picking and choosing or optimizing or charging a fair price or fair share or any of that, it’s right-speak for control and censorship.

And if GINO had made it to the VPs office, if you could access this blog at all it would be slow as molasses. Because network neutrality would be history.

Please remember that every time legislation comes before Congress to regulate the internet. This needs constant vigilance.

  25. You’re very good when you’re”all riled up”. If I asked you to calm down, would that incite a huge ARGHHH and lead to another brilliant post?

    Thank god for bloggers!

The ADN is the worst place to attempt to post comments, in fact I’ve closed my account today.
There is no free speech or truth allowed anywhere on that site, when it comes to posting comments.

This is a post of mine that submitted to The Mudflats today, I am so disgusted with the ADN, I could spit!

    Since this is a round up, I’d like to share the e-mail I sent to the ADN;

As you can see from a few of the comments below, you have a problem. Now folks are starting to spread the word to all the blogs for a boycott of ADN. Is it really worth not taking a minute to review your postings to make sure if they are abusive or not? When you have “most recommended” being called abusive, you are not paying attention at all and demonstrating to your readership you do not believe in free speech.

Unless the ADN is sincerely so supportive of Palin that you do not care about a boycott of your site, withdrawal of advertising etc., I suggest you start paying attention. It sure is not hard to tell that the Palin supporters constantly report unfounded abuses.

The action or inaction you take will determine just how supportive of free speech you are.

    ADN cowers to Palin

It appears that the ADN has cowered and bowed to Palin by blocking hundreds of bloggers who were critical of Palin. You THINK your blog is on the news because you can see it BUT only you can see it, no one else. Palin wins the ADN hands down. She may have lost the AG appointment, the Senate Appointment, etc. but she has sent the ADN in a corner by their HUGE blockage of her critics. I was blocked and as a business owner, I stopped running my business ads. It put a hefty amount of money back in my pocket and I used work of mouth and other ways of promoting the business. ADN is shooting themselves in the foot with this cowering to the Palins. Yes, Palin’s thinking is disturbed, she has garnered the rest of the loonies to report “abuse” for any blogger on ADN who is critical of Palin. You get to a number of “abuse” and poof, you’re gone. Thank god for Andrew’s blog. ADN needs to acquire the same mustard as the legislators have gotten. Stand up, clear out and open up all the hundreds and hundreds of blocked accounts and start thinking this through a bit more
    Something is fishy

Something is definitely going on ad ADN and it is not the ADN. I just posted a small post and it was gone in less than 5 minutes. Last night the same thing and I follow all the rules, OK folks here is what is going on…The S4P, sarah pac and palin bots are contacting their folks by private e-mail, blackberry, blueberry cellphone, carrier pigeon etc, and deluging ADN with complaints on anyone they determine is a threat, they now have a list of posters and are adding daily. They have “watchers” and as soon as the name pops on bang they file a complaint. I have in the past had positives well over 30-40 on my posts and sorry to admit was a supporter so I know how they work. These folks are doing the same things on the open polls now as I observed the other night on KTVA SP’s negatives were under 18% and her positives were over 82% from around 48/52. Many of the people now are the same old names and now a slew from the lower 48. So, if I sound paranoid, I’m not I just know what is going on
My Comments still blocked at ADN
Submitted by MyOwnThoughts on Sun, 2009-04-19 10:02.
I could print out each post I’ve ever written on ADN and show that not one of my posts comes close to crossing any line. I don’t work that way and don’t support others who cross the line with their comments. I think it’s incredible that ADN is blocking so many people from commenting there- especially so many people who write the truths about Palin. I think this issue needs to be given more attention. Either ADN should stop allowing comments or fix this problem. Believer in Truth, Integrity and Ethics

Someone is really doing a job for Palin over at ADN!!!
Submitted by MyOwnThoughts on Tue, 2009-04-14 19:39.
It seems not only is Palin doing odd things with the nominations and stimulus at the moment. It appears like some serious Palin supporters have their hands busy at ADN. I noticed that ppl in my friends list started getting blocked. I thought that was rather strange because the ADN bloggers in my list always seemed like rational respectful posters to me. At first I thought they must have had a “bad day’- until the list of blocked posters in my friends list kept growing. (Had they all suddenly gone nuts and become abusive?) As I looked into it, I saw a post that said posters at ADN are being blocked and they don’t even know it. You see your posts and assume all is normal- but the posts only show to you. I logged out and looked for my posts- and it appears to be true!!!! Here’s my last post-under an article about Palin that was in the ADN today -MyOwnThoughts wrote on 04/14/2009 05:26:50 PM: Palin clearly had reason to meet with the lawmakers last month when she cancelled on them and tossed the blame on them. With the stimulus money a major issue that she keeps flip-flopping on and limited time left in the session- it seems clear where she should be if Alaska is one of her main concerns. It certainly is noteworthy that she cancelled plans the plans for the GOP meeting in June- stating she needed to be in Alaska – when that’s well after the session ends. As for her special needs being one of her main concerns- I don’t see how anyone believes her on that when she put such a risk on Trigs life by flying during labor- knowing he was special needs and probably would need some immediate care. Sarah does what is best for herself first- and apparently that isn’t doing what’s best for Alaska. That Post Now Seems to be blocked. I believe that the ADN has all my posts blocked! It seems that things you can say about Palin here or on other decent cites- are in the process of being blocked on ADN! Believer in Truth, Integrity and Ethics

    People are manipulating ADN
    Submitted by truth4all on Wed, 2009-04-15 09:58.
It’s the folks over at conservatives4palin and teamsarah. They go around trolling comment sections on all “anti-palin” articles posted each day. They are abusing the “report abuse” feature on ADN and causing accounts to be removed or blocked. They spend their days doing this on countless websites. They also gather to manipulate poll results whenever they run across a poll regarding palin
I too am blocked at ADN
Submitted by chasm on Wed, 2009-04-15 06:18.
I calculate that ADN has gutted the comments section by blocking about 60 to 70 percent of the posters. I have never used profanity and never called other posters names, although I may have called the governor an idiot a time or two. This is a form of censorship. From the very beginning the ADN and KTUU have been apologists for Palin and have refused to follow up on the most obvious misuses of power. Now they will decide who gets to post based on whether they are a supporter or a critic of the governor
Yes.. What ADN is doing is actually shocking!
Submitted by MyOwnThoughts on Wed, 2009-04-15 10:11.
I too never use profanity in my posts and don’t bash other posters. (Worse thing I have said to a poster is support Palin if you choose- but HOW can you believe Palin?) My comments about Palin actually are fairly consistent – 1. Palin facts are not Plain facts 2. Sarah had no new tricks- it’s all about Sarah 3. AK is a beautiful state- but you can’t see Palin’s integrity from there! My “ADN friends’ did not have any rude posts that I ever saw- and they are now all blocked as well. Everyone in my ADN list!! BTW they were some of the posters with top ADN recommend pts on their posts!! What ADN is doing is shocking! They need to restore the comments or end all commenting completely. Believer in Truth, Integrity and Ethics
It’s the Palinbots (sorry for long comment)
    Submitted by truth4all on Wed, 2009-04-15 09:15.
I’m starting to think that it’s not ADN doing this; ADN has been “Freeped”. The hardcore Sarah supporters (mostly from lower 48) at the Conservatives4Palin and TeamSarah have been exhibiting this behavior all over the place. They all got together and “Freeped” the KTUU poll regarding whether Palin was right in taking off at the end of the session. It was 80% Yes (it’s fine that she’s going) and 20% No (not okay she is going). Hmm, somehow I doubt that if the poll had been based on a 100% Alaskan response the outcome would have been the same. There are a few diehard “Palin can do no wrong” people on her websites that spend the entire day trolling on Progressive blogs and looking for polls they can influence. They show up to comment on every news article that comes out regarding Palin and they will call anti-Palin commenters “abusers” and have them banned. I think on ADN they are using the “Abuse” button and perhaps ADN has some sort of automatic account shutdown if you are reported for abuse repeatedly. That would mean that no one actually reviews the comments reported as “Abuse” and these “rabble rousers” can actually kill your account by reporting you. I’m going to do some research their system today as it’s happening to too many posters that have not broken the ADN rules to just be an ADN issue. So yup, yup, there is small but vicious “Palin Army” that is trying to censor us. I guess when she’s not busy headin’ up the National Guard in Alaska she’s drawin’ up battle plans and givin’ marchin’ orders to her own little army

  26. She doesn’t appreciate the chicken/egg issue. I found your wonderful blog (as well as Mudflats) by searching the internet BECAUSE of my concerns about Palin. I did not develop concerns about Palin because of the blogs.

  27. Great post Shannyn! You never leave anything out!!

  28. I second the opinions here about your summary of the W.A.R. press release by SP…such foolishness by SP, I suppose she thought she was being cunning in bringing up the “machine gun shoot”.

But, Shannyn, you forgot one “fault” in your litany of SP’s wrongdoings:

Whose fault was it in that infamous recorded prank telephone call to giggle and laugh for 8 minutes and be completely oblivious to what otherwise would have been international protocol violations, national election campaign violations, running-mate disrespect, and just plain stupidity?

Oh, yeah, she blamed that on her handlers. Well, they DID let the call go through after the pranksters spent two days getting through RNC security.

  29. WOW!! I didn’t realize all you bloggers were so powerful! Powerful enough to convince Republican legislators! I guess I better be nicer to you all or, or, who knows what might happen???

Kidding aside, another great post Shannyn. Thanks for all you do.

  30. I love your post. Sarah NEVER takes responsibility for anything. She never admits a fault or apologizes. She goes into blaming rages when questioned. She is a classic NPD, which means she will never get it. I really feel sorry for her children. I hope they have access to good therapy.

  31. I concur…your writing is always complete and factual…congrats once again!

little question on the palin pic you selected…what’s with her teeth in this one? Is she sticking her tongue out or did she get lipstick on them? …or does she have caps now?
    **********NOTE FROM SHANNY**********
HA! That is a morphed pic of Sarah and George Bush.. YIKES.

  32. Well,…..if you want to play their game and sauce their gander… could make some new accounts and then use the abuse report button on all of them. I assume if you don’t know exactly who they are it wouldn’t be hard to compile a list. Eventually, no one will be able to post on ADN. Then maybe ADN will figure out they have a “button war” going on. Then they can either appoint a staff member to review abuse reports or they can turn off the comments completely.

  33. Hilarious!!! Shannyn, you got me!

  34. shannyn, excellent post.

you were great with OLBERMANN, too.

& thanks for continuing to expose SP’s cluelessness.

speaking of bloggers: have you checked
PALIN DECEPTION; the website and blog:

it’s been going since the question arose as to who birthed TRIG. we sure could use your help with your knowledge of all things ALASKAN. c

    ome visit us.

  35. Well done mate!

I wonder if Doogan is paying attention… I mean, you know his opinion of us… bloggers in pajamas and all…

Well doneShannyn – if i could insert the sound of applause I surely would 🙂

  36. And ADN listens to her…

Here is an email I just got from

“You actually have been blocked since April 7. Given what you said in your note, you may have gotten blocked for fairly generic criticisms of Sarah Palin. I have no problem with thoughtful, substantive criticism of Palin or any politician. But it has to be more than: “Sarah is stupid. Sarah is unethical. Thank god she lost the election. etc.”

I think this is where the non-Alaskan commenters (on both sides) sometimes struggle: they don’t have a lot of background on Alaska public life and history, so it can be hard to say much that isn’t relatively superficial and a repeat of comments that have been made many times already. I am determined that the comments will offer something more than an endless (even if polite) duel between “Sarah is terrible” and “Sarah is wonderful.”

Are ignorant non-Alaskans welcome here, Shannyn?
    **********NOTE FROM SHANNYN**********
My blog is just like my radio show…any one can come to the table…just bring your manners! Some comments don’t add, some are critical of me, some blow sunshine up my skirt….as long as people aren’t being too nasty to each other, fine. You are welcome…there’s no test.

  37. That picture is just plain scary. I first thought it was just Palin stripped of her makeup. Then I find out it is Bush and Palin morphed together? It startling how similar in personality and appearance they are! Perhaps we have been invaded by an borg like alien lizard species with hearts and minds as black as oil. The illegal immigration problem is merely a distraction from the onset of the Alien Nation!

…it all makes sense now, hand me some more tinfoil.

  38. well.. it’s like I said!

  39. I should email you about this.
