Alaska Legislature Oh-So-Special Session…UPDATE

The Alaska legislature, in a joint session has voted to over-ride former Governor Sarah Palin’s veto of $28.6 million dollars of federal energy and weatherization funds…with not one vote to spare. I FEEL SO STIMULATED! Weatherization and energy needs for Alaskans! Wahoooo!

Palin’s brother was in the audience. Standing room only.

After some debate, the legislators voted to over-ride Sarah Palin’s veto 45 yeas to 14 nays. $28.6 million dollars in federal energy and weatherization stimulus funds will now not be going to another state. Contrary to the Street Tea Baggers…the funds WOULD NOT have gone back to the US Treasury. Alaska federal tax payers would have still been on the hook, however. At least now, with the veto over-ride, the State of Alaska derives the benefit of the federal stimulus funds.

No votes cast in the House:Austerman, Kelly, Stoltze, Neuman, Keller, Fairclough, Lynn, Johnson, Coghill
No votes cast in the Senate: Therriault, Wagoner, Bunde, Dyson, Huggins

The Alaska Legislature, meeting in an oh-so-special session in downtown Anchorage at the Egan Center, also confirmed Craig Campbell as Lt. Governor. This special session, triggered by Sarah Palin’s unexpected and abrupt departure, was estimated to cost somewhere north of $100,000.

Senator Burt Stedman is reviewing other vetoes of former Governor Palin for a possible joint session debate and over-ride. The vetoed projects in question include $4.9 Million for Alaska Court System’s Anchorage Campus, $394,000 Alaska Court upgrades, $2.3 Million for Ketchikan Cruise Ship berth replacement and signal, over $2.6 Million for Sitka projects, $1Million for Informations Services. For a total of over $11Million dollars.

I’ll update soon, but let me say, the Senate Minority should STAY THE MINORITY. They are complete obstructionist…ideologically stunted.

Sarah Palin’s other vetos were not over ridden.

  1. All the usual suspects. I’m very glad to read that this passed, even if it was a squeaker. I’m not so sure about Craig Campbell, but there’s only a year and a half until the next election.

  2. The only way this news could have been sweeter was if she actually was still in office to get over-ridden.

  3. Kudos to Alaska’s legislature! They are smarter than the Mavericky One!

  4. Ditto with Scott Micheals

  5. I don’t understand why this over-ride is effective if what Les Gara, as earlier quoted at this blog, said here is true:

“The Appropriations bill appropriated funds subject, I believe, to receipt from the Federal Government. We haven’t received those funds because the Governor hasn’t applied for them. So, she’s vetoed funds we don’t have. Overriding the veto won’t bring those funds to the state. The operative action needed from the Governor would be an application for the funds, which she has refused to submit.”

Doesn’t the legislature need to find a way to force Parnell to apply for the funds? Or is Les Gara’s interpretation of the process mistaken?

  6. Shannyn, I thought I heard on TV somewhere that some of the Alaskan stimulus money was used to build an airport for a private company. Improperly used. Have you heard this? I kept expecting to see a story somewhere but it never did.
Congratulations Alaskans! It was unbelievable (but no surprise) that Sarah was LYING about the strings up until the last minute. Her ability to boldly lie over and over even after the liehas been proven false is very scary!!!

  7. That still kills me…A Governor of Alaska who would attempt to turn down Weatherization funds. I chuckle and then get a blank, stupified look on my face when I think of that. What a moron, yet comedic pot o’ gold Sarah is. Cheers From Ohio!!

  8. It was nice to meet you Shannyn. I am the guy who asked if that was a wanted poster in your purse.
The whackos were out in force today. But I would say the majority of the crowd in the Egan Center were supporters of the veto over ride given the applause whne it passed.
It would seem some in the Legislature would like Alaska to succeed from the Union and the the Federal Gov. to keep to its self. I was astounded at some of the remarks from a few of the lawmakers especialy Senator Dyson WOW!
But great write up Ms Moore. Again great to meet you. Tom

  9. Shannyn,

I get the feeling that you don’t like Ms. Palin… Is this ideological or personal?

I voted for John McCain… because I met him a few weeks after he was returned during the Vietnam prisoner releases. I admired his guts and overall commitment to this country. Obama I’m afraid does not have either.

I’m not a sarah Palin fan, but I don’t dislike her either.

    • Doctor Doctor, Here’s the News:

Dislike of Private Citizen Palin is not personal, even though she is personally very dislikable. If you are curious as to way, I’d suggest you review my personal favorite It’s Not Sarah’s Fault, Just Ask Her.

If that’s not enough, my close personal favorite web site Samsara Samizdat has several good articles explaining why Private Citizen Palin is irresponsible, and just plain dishonest.

I am guessing you honestly care, and are looking for information and a real answer. If not, I’m sorry I assumed your good faith.

      I remain:
      Still cranky.
      Bill Abendroth

    • Funny but what I have read about him he sold out and gave the enemy flight paths where our pilots would go,which put them at great risk .From what I read he used his father and grandfather to get special treatment. That in no way makes him an admirable man.Isn’t the internet a wonderful place to find out little known facts

      • “Funny but what I have read about him…”

        1. If any of that were true he would not be a Senator, he would be in prison for treason.

        2. Tactical information is only good for 24 hours and any information that he would have was changed long before be was interrogated.

        3. If your information is this bad I am sorry for you. It also sounds like the typical hate rumors that I hear and read from both sides of the party line.

  10. Former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin says the health care overhaul bill would set up a “death panel.” Federal bureaucrats would play God, ruling on whether ailing seniors are worth enough to society to deserve life-sustaining medical care. Palin and other critics are wrong.

Nothing in the legislation would carry out such a bleak vision. The provision that has caused the uproar would instead authorize Medicare to pay doctors for counseling patients about end-of-life care, if the patient wishes. Here are some questions and answers on the controversy:

Q: Does the health care legislation bill promote “mercy killing,” or euthanasia?

    A: No.

Q: Then what’s all the fuss about?

A: A provision in the House bill written by Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., would allow Medicare to pay doctors for voluntary counseling sessions that address end-of-life issues. The conversations between doctor and patient would include living wills, making a close relative or a trusted friend your health care proxy, learning about hospice as an option for the terminally ill, and information about pain medications for people suffering chronic discomfort.

The sessions would be covered every five years, more frequently if someone is gravely ill.

  11. If scaring Elderly Citizens is all Sarah Palin can offer, well, hopefully her “Higher Calling” will get her outta Dodge.

  12. If the legislature had done the right thing and impeached Palin after the Branchflower report…………..they would not have all this mess to contend with.

If they accept Campbell without knowing what he is really all about…………..history will repeat itself.

I hope for the sake of Alaskans, that the legislature have learned a lesson.

They had better grow a spine and stop making excuses about “no political will”.

Those who have “no political will”, are obviously in the wrong job and the results have been disastrous for Alaskans.

Although John McCain foisted Palin on the rest of the country, the only people able to stop her were the Alaskan legislature.

I repeat…What does a governor have to do in Alaska to be impeached? Kill a baby on the steps of the state capitol at high noon?

The legislature were the ones that found her to have excessively abused the power of her office.

Now the entire country gets to put up with her nonsense

  13. Check out this interview with Levi Johnston just posted .. dynamite ! about third or fourth down the page … made headlines already down here in NZ which is how I know about it ….

  14. Martha……one of the great American things happening right now is this. Sarah Palins voice is being drowned out by the national media attention she is recieving for being an IDIOT! We are hearing more voices such as Shannyn Moores, Keith Oberman, Jon Daily to name a few. Even some prominent Republicans have spoken out against Palins words. I believe the country or the majority of it, are smart enough to take Palin as the comedy she is.

  15. WAIT A MINUTE! There must be some mistake here…..$28.6 million of stimulus was vetoed by Private Citizen Palin? But in her going away speech, she said her vetoes saved “hundreds of millions” of dollars.

Next thing you know, you’ll be telling us that Alaska didn’t spend “millions of dollars” investigating the ethics complaints filed against Private Citizen Palin……

  16. Just so everyone knows my reply was for Karma Doc about McCain not anyone else
