Joe Miller’s Alaska Militia

Joe Miller is fond of private security.

In the Spring of 2008, Joe Miller showed up wearing Eric Estrada circa 1984 mirrored sunglasses, with security guards in a staged coup d’état of the leadership of the Alaska Republican Party. He lost. Randy Ruedrich still stands supreme as the party Chair, and now supports the man who once tried to oust him.

Fast forward to July 4, 2010 – US Senate candidate Joe Miller’s supporters marched with assault rifles and campaign signs.

The Alaska Dispatch has been doggedly pursuing a story on why Joe Miller lost his job several months after the attempted takeover encouraged by then-governor Sarah Palin.  All indicators point toward Miller using the computer resources of his employer, the Fairbanks North Star Borough, to rig some sort of vote, and then clearing out the cache to conceal that fact.

On Sunday, Joe Miller, candidate for US Senate, held a town hall meeting at a middle school in Anchorage. When asked about illegal immigration, Miller offered up: Build a wall! “If the East Germans could do it, so can we!”

Really? The Stasi? I know Palin said we could see Russia from Alaska, but East Germany is pushing it.

Tony Hopfinger, editor at the Alaska Dispatch and host of a US Senate debate scheduled for Monday evening, followed Joe Miller into the hallway after the debate to ask additional questions.  At a press conference last week, Miller announced he would no longer be taking questions about his past, but has continued advertising his past accomplishments; military combat service, Yale Law School, federal magistrate, etc.

According to Hopfinger:

1. Hopfinger had been trying to ask Miller questions when two or three guards told him to leave or risk being charged with trespassing.

2. When Hopfinger continued to try to ask questions, one of the guards put the reporter in an arm-bar and then handcuffed him.

3.  Hopfinger was released after police arrived.

4.  The reporter was on public property where a public event was being held at the time of the incident.

5.  Miller has been adamant about his desire to avoid talking to the Alaska media, but no one in the working press in Alaska has ever before seen a candidate go to this length to avoid questions.

It is bizarre enough to have a reporter “arrested” by private security, but those of us who drive past The Drop Zone, the business behind Miller’s security, every day aren’t surprised by their over-reach or connection to Joe Miller.

The only thing more extreme than the weather and wildlife in Alaska is the politics. The Drop Zone was a sponsor of Palin apologist and former radio host, Eddie Burke. The DZ bragged to patrons about their security squad being littered with former Blackwater operatives. Not disclosing full names and a preference for cash transactions were commonplace.  A poster of President Obama as the Joker hangs in their front window.

Part of being a 2nd Amendment Progressive in Alaska is having friends who are gun nuts. Several have recalled “Bill” at the Drop Zone boasting about his partners’ participation in rendition and black ops overseas. He would show off the 50 caliber sniper rifle worth at least $80,000.  No one I know would ask what it was worth.  It doesn’t take a sniper rifle to put a moose in your freezer.

“Bill”, identified in news accounts of this story, is William Fulton. He is the owner of the Drop Zone. Bill was photographed in front of the Alaska 9/11 Glenn Beck-Sarah Palin rally after accosting and pointing a finger at a protester while shouting in her face, “Socialist!” The woman’s sign said, “Don’t be stupid Alaskans, Don’t Vote Joe Miller, We Deserve Better…”, and she held her own against the verbal onslaught. (see picture below)
Bill loves Glenn Beck and was heard saying, “Glenn talks to the crazies,” who are his best customers.

Extremists aren’t rare in Alaska. Through Todd Palin, the nation became aware of the Alaska secessionist group known as the Alaska Independence Party. Norm Olson, who was ousted from the Michigan Militia for being too radical, set up camp in Nikiski and started the Alaska Militia.

Having a personal militia is not common. Joe Miller’s narcissistic, militant disorder has come to full light with the detainment of journalist Tony Hopfinger. Political candidates with their own mercenaries are a recipe for disaster.

I think Scott McAdams, the Democratic candidate on the ticket opposing Joe Miller, put it best: “@JoeWMiller – in case you were unaware, the Constitution also applies to reporters.”

Responses

  1. Time to start calling him “Gestapo Joe”. He and Bible Spice both want to take away freedoms that are guaranteed by the Constitution. Scary sh#t.

  2. Has this been cross posted at Huff Post Shannyn? If not, it should be. Great post!

    Thanks!

  3. Thankyouverymuch, IDIOT PALIN, for visiting all this crap on Alaska……….Shannyn, your info must go national. The “lower 48” have a bunch of loonies in the Dakotas and Idaho, but I think your loonies take the cake. An armed attempt to take over the Republican Party of Alaska, encouraged by the Idiot Palin? I guess the people who support this fool will think it is “way cool”. Fortunately, sane people will be horrified.

Sadly, we have become such a hateful bunch of people who know no limits. There have always been hate mongers, but they knew to stay under their rocks………..until the Idiot Palin gave them a voice. She is the poster child of hate and ignorance…….a deadly combination.

Do NOT watch her reality show on TLC…….call or write TLC and tell them you will stop supporting their network (like they care, right?) Put it on every blog you visit.
Alaska is beautiful and if anyone else were doing a show, like the Ice Road Truckers did, I would watch with fascination. But, Palin QUIT on Alaska to seek fame and fortune and TLC has given her yet another vehicle to move her toward 2012.

There is some scary stuff going on in Alaska, but none more scary than an ignorant ,vile ,trollop …….. backed by the worst hate mongers on the planet…. who wants to be president.

    • Whoa, just a minute! There are no “crazies” here in the Dakotas, you misinformed moron. There are far more “crazies” living in Colorado Springs, if you were not so busy tossing off state names. Check it out for yourself. Idaho & Michigan maybe, but not here. You owe us an apology.

      • All thye crazies in ND were wiped out long ago–although the tea baggers are here real close to Gordon Kaul’s positions on a whole lot of issues.

  4. It appears that for Sarah (Menard Sports Center events), Joe Miller and a handful of others, a simple reasonable contract detail to provide security when booking events in public facilities, has become a rationale for bodyguards and personal security forces.
    Who are they afraid of?

Event security is to keep the event peaceful. The security guys themselves aren’t supposed to be stirring up disturbance.

  5. When Alaska starts to be referred to as “The Fatherland” and the invasion of British Columbia starts in the name of “freedom”….do you think that the rest of America will figure out that something strange is going on up there?

    But seriously, folks………

  6. Thanks for sending us Sarah Palin, Alaska. We’re sorry to say that she’s the wrong “fit” for us. You wouldn’t mind if we exchanged the gift for something more moderate and sane, would you? Thanks, The Lower 48.

    • We did not send you SP- Mr McCain let that one loose.
We were working hard to clip her wings with the real Troopergate investigation .
Without the VP run thingy it’s likely we would have prevailed… also too and she would be winding down her one and only gov-ship and slinking back to Wasilla.
Instead we got the RNC and all the lulubirds in the country here raising heck and messing up what should have been her swan song…
All that being said, we have a melting ice floe with her name on it… send her home.

  7. So glad to get your take on this, Shannyn. The information we are getting in CA is incomplete and, of course, without any background or history. I hope the reporter sues for false arrest and imprisonment.

  8. It seems down here the lower 48, the only thing politically motivating about Alaska is the Palin Machine.
The whole nation needs to be involved in Senate campaigns. These senators, regardless of the state they represent, vote on issues that effect EVERYONE.
Crazies like Joe Miller and Christine O’Donnell and Sharron Angle would be choosing Justices, sitting on committees and voting on matters that could change the Constitution.
We need to support EVERY Democratic candidate. Don’t sit on your hands regardless of what state you are in!
Call up Democratic parties in States like Nevada, Alaska, etc and ask if you can make phone calls.
Get involved no matter what state you are in. Because this election cycle has brought out the worst of the nut jobs…
And although they are fun to watch and its fun to listen to the crazy shit they say, watching them do it from the Floor of the US Senate is downright effing scary.
    Shelly

  9. Joe Miller is to Alaska Political Theater, a gift that just keeps on giving.

First there were the public assistance $ use – hypocritical remarks as well as the possibility of fudging the rules in order to gain benefit.

Then there’s the secretive military discharge record – all the while interjecting his military service and medal earning every chance he gets.

Then came the word that Old Joe was busy using co-worker’s computers (potentially illegally and certainly un-ethically) to influence the outcome of the Republican leadership in Alaska.

And lastly – his refusal to answer any questions from anyone – and the need to enforce his silence with legally questionable enforcement intimidation actions.

The only thing he has left to give us now is some sort of sorid sexual outing. What say you Spenard working girls? Got anything you’d like to share with Alaskan’s?

  10. […] private security is provided by a company called Drop Zone.  Shannyn Moore reports, on her excellent blog Just a Girl From Homer, in a post titled “Joe Miller’s Alaska Militia… that Drop Zone brags “to patrons about their security squad being littered with former […]

  11. Does Drop Zone even have proper permits for their activities? See copies of expired permits at:

    http://www.thepoliticalcarnival.net/2010/10/does-joe-millers-private-security-company-have-an-expired-license/

    • Sure doesn’t appear that way does it.

  12. I’m confused; Under what LEGAL authority did the 5th Polaris Division of the Wasilla SS “arrest and/or detain” Mr. Hopfinger?” What Local, State or, God forbid, FEDERAL Law, gave them the authority to physically restrain and confine a citizen at a public event in a publicly funded and maintained building?

  13. I doubt a working girl worth her strappy hooker heels would bother with Joe…too creepy
But really, can some one give us (me) an update on Joe’s military record, I didn’t know there was a question about that. Also, how did he manage to get into the Academy? What is his famyly back ground and how did he pay for Yale? Gads, don’t tell me it was student loans! What’s the story on his wife? Did he marry into money? Would appreciate the info!

  14. My friends have been asking if that’s me in the tux. I was walking to a gig in ACPA on the same night as the Glen Beck event. I saw this woman, peacefully protesting with a sign and a goon from the Miller camp harassing her. So I stood by her to help deflect his attack. In the photo, I was smiling. That’s because the guy was spouting off some crazy talk some right wing ideas on education. I’m a teacher. He was making me laugh, (which didn’t please him very much).

    • Sometimes the only sane response to the rehtoric these people spew is laughter. You cannot argue with them logically; they have no patience or understanding of facts. You cannot discuss with them politely, they have no understanding of fair discourse and debate. So, that leaves one proper response – ridicule and laughter. It’s stops them in their tracks, they don’t know how to respond to it and they can’t defend themselves against it.

      Chortle onward!

  15. Miller is getting more advertising funds to run an anti-abortion campaign.

    http://progressivealaska.blogspot.com/2010/10/de-mint-to-spend-100k-on-joe-teabagger.html

A grassroots effort would be to go on all the Alaskan blogs listed on the rightside of Munger’s website, and just state that you are voting for McAdams. People need to know that there is viability to McAdams campaign.

  16. who’s the wormshit in the green t shirt standing in front of the lady holding the poster in the photo?

  17. i guess i didn’t pay enough attention to the comment. william fulton is the wormshit. sorry about that.

  18. Miller is a wacko, Lisa is a Republican puppet for special interests. Scott McAdams is an Alaskan without all the colorful baggage. How refreshing.

  19. Your bias against Joe Miller, a decorated soldier who has served our nation, is sickening. Your contempt for Sarah Palin also is. I was raised in Homer and my family still resides in Alaska. Increasingly they tell me Homer has become a liberal zone intent on one extreme left wing notion after another. Perhaps that is a result of too many left coasties from California, Oregon and Washington moving there, I don’t know. What I do know is Joe Miller is an American citizen and worthy of more respect than he is receiving.
