STOLEN ELECTION IN ALASKA?

Something stinks. Not just an ordinary low tide smell. Not like something you’d blame on the dog. It smells like an infection. For me to plug my nose, I’d have to overlook some curious facts.

In Alaska, more people voted for George W. Bush in 2004 than for Sarah Palin on Tuesday despite an identical 61-36 margin of victory. Yes. Only four years ago 54,304 Alaskans got off their sofas and voted for Bush, but decided to sit home and not vote for Palin in 2008. In turn, I have to ignore the 30,520 Alaskans who felt progressive enough in 2004 to vote for John Kerry, but weren’t inspired to vote for Barack Obama. I would have to glance past the 1,700% increase in the Democratic caucus in February, the 20,991 newly registered voters, and the three largest political rallies in Alaska’s history. I would also have to forget the people I stood in a long line with to early vote. It would be helpful not to know every other presidential election since Alaska began keeping records has had a larger turn out than the one we just had with our own Governor on the ticket. Try not to remember 12.4% more Alaskans showed up for the August primary as compared to four years ago, before the Palin nomination. Don’t think about the Lower 49’s record voter turn out this year either. Try to delete the memory file, though difficult, that 80% of us approved of Sarah Palin just two months ago.

Something stinks. You don’t care? Obama won. Yes. He. Did! Free at Last! Wait. Democracy demands all of the votes be counted…if you can find them.

In the balance hangs the fate of Alaska’s Senate and House seats. We still don’t know if we have elected the now convicted felon Ted Stevens, or Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich. We still don’t know if Don Young and his million dollar legal problems will defeat former State Representative Ethan Berkowitz and his dreams of Washington DC. Alaska hasn’t had Democrat representation in Congress since Mike Gravel lost his senate seat in 1980.

Four years ago, 313,592 out of 474,740 registered voters in Alaska participated in the election-a 66% turnout. Taking into account 49,000 outstanding ballots, on Tuesday 272,633 out of 495,731 registered Alaskans showed up at the polls; a turnout of 54.9%. That’s a decrease of more than 11% in voter turnout even though passions ran high for and against Barack Obama, as well as for and against Sarah Palin! This year, early voters set a new record. As of last Thursday, with 4 days left to vote early, 15,000 Alaskans showed up-shattering the old record set in 2004 by 28%! Consider the most popular governor in history-and now the most polarizing-was on the Republican ticket. Consider the historic nature of this race; the first African American presidential candidate EVER! The second woman to ever make a presidential ticket; and she’s one of our own. Despite that, we’re supposed to believe that overall participation DECREASED by 11%. Not only that, but this historic election both nationally and for Alaska HAD THE LOWEST ALASKA TURNOUT FOR A PRESIDENTIAL RACE EVER!!! That makes sense. REALLY??? Something stinks.

But wait, there’s more…

Pre election polls had both Mark Begich-D and Ethan Berkowitz-D solidly beating incumbents Senator Ted Stevens and Congressman Don Young by at least 6-10 points. Stevens is currently ahead by 3,353 votes with 49,000 ballots left to count. Berkowitz, however, is behind by 16,887 votes; a 51-43 margin.

Are we to believe Don Young came from an 8 point average polling deficit to win by 8 points-a whopping 16 point turnaround??? Remember how historic the pundits thought Hillary Clinton’s come from behind New Hampshire Primary victory was? She trailed Barack Obama by 9% in the pre primary polls and ended up winning by 2 points. It was called the most “stunning comeback in political history.” On Election Night, Don Young topped Hillary Clinton’s startling and unprecedented comeback.

Furthermore, there were nearly three thousand Alaskans, (2,783) that voted yet left the hotly contested congressional race blank. In the highly publicized senate race, complete with a nationally covered trial that ended with seven felony convictions for the incumbent, 1,392 Alaskans submitted a ballot and failed to register a vote in the senate race. I’m not sure statistically what that means, but it strikes me as odd that well over a thousand Alaskans would wait in long lines and not cast a vote in either the senate race or the congressional race-especially since there was only one ballot measure. In addition, this particular election had an extra high degree of local interest with Governor Palin on the national stage.

McCain-Palin was ahead in Alaska pre election polling by as much as 55-40. The Haysresearch Poll that came out Sunday indicated that gap had closed to 2.7 points! That poll was certainly consistent with Palin’s reverse meteoric fall in popularity within the state of Alaska. In that same Haysresearch Poll released on November 2, Question 2 addressed Governor Palin’s positive-negative rating. 11% of Alaskans surveyed said their opinion of Palin had become more positive while 37% indicated they were more negative towards Palin. Yesterday’s vote contradicts those polls. McCain-Palin won Alaska 61-36! A 25 POINT SPREAD!!! An identical point spread as the 2004 Election.

Alaska has certainly had our share of election hanky panky. Check out this link to our 2004 election results. There are 40 districts in Alaska. The Anchorage area districts run from District 17-District 32. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and pick any district from 17-32. Pay particular attention to the 3rd column labeled % turnout. Hit the back arrow and select another district. There are more precincts with voter turnout over 100% than under 100%. In other words, many more people voted in Anchorage area precincts than there were registered voters. Clearly, this is not possible.

In 2006, the Democrats filed a lawsuit against the Alaska Division of Elections to release public records needed to verify the 2004 election results. The Democrats also sought to have the Alaska Division of Elections release the raw data for the 2006 election. The State requested several deadline extensions and eventually refused to release the “central tabulator data file” taken from the Diebold-supplied computer used to run the “GEMS” (Global Election Management Software) application. A lawsuit was filed in Superior Court seeking release of the records. The Court eventually forced the State to release the 2004 database. The software was found to contain hundreds of edits after the 2004 election, including as late as July of 2006, prior to the release of the data.

With all that history, and the bizarre anomalies in polling and voting and reports from the field of ballots not being scanned on-site due to broken machines, could this election have been stolen?

The world is watching Alaska’s US Senate race. When President-Elect Barack Obama is sworn in on January 20, he will be greeted by a Senate with at least 57 Democrats-three shy of a filibuster-proof majority. And, there are still three hotly contested US Senate races that are too close to call; Georgia, Minnesota and Alaska. Just when we thought we were out of the national spotlight…

I’ve always said if Democracy was a religion, voting would be the sacrament. I’m wondering if someone stole the body and blood of this election. I’m wondering if the wine isn’t poisoned. Take a few whiffs. Breathe deeply. See if you don’t come to the same conclusion. Where are the votes? Something stinks at the Alaska Division of Elections.

  1. Of course the election was stolen. Just like many areas of the Lower 48; this and past years;Florida and Ohio in a big way in2004. Likely the machines are rigged.

What happened with the “request for public records” by the Dems??

My husband and I cruised Alaska this past September. It was spectacular…especially Glacier Bay.
I listen to Shannon on John’s radio show these past weeks.

    • Shannynn Moore go crawl back under that rock you came out from under!

      • Seems like the Russ is the one whom lives under rocks. It’s really interesting how close minded you are, lacking in inquiry, understanding and rational thought. Seems like you’ve been bought with the tax exemption the state subsides churches with – so keep your mouth shut and mind closed. Yes that is the mantra of fascism you speak with your forked tongue.

I’m happy to see someone thinking critically about the election process, I am not one to really to get taken by the representative democratic process. Realized democracy is participatory democracy, how can anyone person represent 500,000 people? epically when corporations are people with highly paid lobbyists to insure that their commercial interests are at the forefront of political decision making process.

      • Another useless post from a critic. Can’t you people articulate and support a point of view? If not, you need to go back to high school so your teachers can educate you. When you’ve gained the skills, feel free to return and contribute something worth reading.

  2. Ok, Shannyn, intriguing. I’m inclined to believe something is rotten in AK, especially because Diebold’s proprietary rights trump Alaskans’ right to know how what happened happened.

One thing I disagree with, though, is this repeated statement that the pro-Obama, anti-Palin rallies are the largest politcal rallies in AK history. I attended 2 “We the People” Native Alaskan protests on the parkstrip during successive AFN conventions that I believe had higher turnout.

Also, it is possible for the voting rolls to increase as they did, and then for the voter turnout % to reduce from the previous election – not likely for all the reasons you stated, but possible – I’m just saying…

I am having trouble accessing district by district results from the state election website – software compatibility problems. Will you post these? Even, Stazi (Fox) news doesn’t have AK district results posted on their map like they have for all other states.

  3. You are doing a public service by exposing election fraud in Alaska! Keep up the great work, girl! It should come as no surprise that funny business would extend to your state. The solution is to abandon the use of electronic voting machines and return to paper ballots. With these machines, not only is the vote count secret but, without a paper trail, there is no possibility for a recount. This is an outrage and violates our most basic political right as American citizens–the right to vote and to have it count!

Looks like a lot of votes yet to be counted, and it would not surprise me that the early voters tended to favor Begich. One thing that stands out is the number of “questioned ballots”, especially in certain districts. Just appears to me to be a higher number than would be expected.

  5. Great post Shannyn!

I also posted about this topic over at the Immoral Minority, and linked back to you.

Let’s get this word out to EVERYBODY!

  6. You might want to check out this site:
    http://www.velvetrevolution.us.prosecute_rove
They are trying to gather hard evidence of election tampering. It also includes an email to your Congressmen demanding investigation of this, with a spot for you won persoanl message. In your case. you might want to send it to some other congressman. (It makes good readiing in any case.)
Keep up the good work, Shannyn-this fight is not over.

  7. I voted Monday the 27th in the Valley. We just put our ballots in a box when done. They were not scanned. I have always had a nagging feeling about it. I don’t know how it works. Are blank ballots counted at the beginning and then matched with the number of marked ballots at the end of the day? And was there more than one person doing that at the end of the day? Like I said, this has nagged at me since then.

  8. The folks at http://www.blackboxvoting.org may be able to help. The 61-36 numbers over and over again seem awfully suspicious to me.

  9. that’s

  10. Shannyn, could it possibly be the smell is rising from the 2004 election? and not this one?

  11. very interesting article. I did look at the 2004 numbers–has anyone from Alaska Elections adequately explained how 1674 people could have voted in a precinct containing only 1507 registered voters? Unless your state’s voters can register on election day at the same time they vote, I don’t see how this is possible.

  12. It smells alright. Did I hear Diebold? Every Election where these machines are being used is suspect. I don’t know if there’s anyway for verification other than an insider human whistleblower. Any investigation only raises more and more questions.

It is a gross failure of our election system in which they are still being used with such a questionable record. We need fundamental reform to establish a uniform national code for these machines.

  13. Here in Arizona, McCain/Palin won by about 9 points. The local news reported that this year only about 64% of the registered voters voted while last election year, there were about 77% voting. I find this very hard to believe. I felt all along that Obama might win Arizona – and who knows – maybe he did.
It’s a sad commentary on this country when we have to question the results.
At least the final outcome was the way it should be.

  14. Shannyn, I’ll say it again! YOU ROCK SO INCREDIBLY HARD! Your like the Neil Pert of Alaska politics. swiveling around on your throne hitting every relevant accent and fill perfectly. Your a painter and a musician! Thanks for all your investigative reporting!

Mae, that’s a good question, but still wouldn’t you think Alaska’s turnout would be higher with the excitement over Obama and our own popular governor on the the ticket? The national average turnout was a record breaking 64%… Alaska 10% points lower? I don’t know, looks suspicious to me?

I guess we should go back 20 years and look at what the Alaska voting turnout percentages have been.

Vote by mail seems to be a very good system. Oregon and Washington have this set up and it encourages voter turn out. I am not sure how they tally the votes, but I hardly ever hear of problems.

  15. Voting reform should be on the top of every Democrats agenda if they want to remain in power. Our voting process should not be handled by private enterprise.

  16. Holy caribou! Of course, we always have to ask “who stands to gain,” and the answer is Republicans in general and Sarah Palin in particular. She seems quite capable of setting things up so that Stevens wins, Democrats lose, and most of all, Palin herself (always number one in her narcissitic and conscience-free world) is positioned to make a move for Stevens’ seat. God help Alaska. And us if this lying, cheating, demagoue “rears her head” again.

  17. Baja,

Shannyn linked to the history of voter turnout from the Alaska Division of Elections in her article. If you click that link and look back to 1972, you will find that this election had a lower turnout than every presidential election held in Alaska since records were kept. We had great weather. We had two candidates that elicit more passion for and against than any candidate in recent history…

  18. We knew about this before this election was held.

We didn’t demand it be prevented from happening again.

It’s not enough to sit and complain about something happening repeatedly, it’s not enough to complain again each time it happens again.

The voting process is contained and controlled in Palin’s office, did all of you Palin dupes actually believe Palin was anything other than what she’s always been?

The only obvious object lesson taught by this is that apathy won out once again.

Gnashing one’s teeth every election cycle doesn’t do much in the way of preventing this happening again,

….perhaps that suggests something to ponder?

  19. So how do we fight back? I voted early and have had to rely on hope that my vote was counted. (Thank god my state senator & rep were reelected, even if my vote WASN’T counted.)

*************NOTE FROM SHANNYN*************This isn’t about who won. Every vote must be counted. If ballots in Alaska are honestly counted and Don and Ted remain, I can live with that…it’s called Democracy. THIS IS ABOUT TRUE REPRESENTATION OF THE VOTE. We can fight back by letting people know something stinks, and they unplug their noses and help us find where the stench is coming from.

  20. Hi Shannyn,
I remember seeing you during the Olberman show on MSNBC! Today, I was googling for Alaskan Senate election (because, like you, I think there’s something fishy as well!) and stumbled upon your blog.

    Great work, keep it going!

  21. Obama campaign folks are still are work and should be notified – I’m sure they could help or point you in the right direction to get an investigation going.

Cleaning up the election is a big step in getting the Alaskan government cleaned up.

We all support you here in the lower 48!

  22. Shannyn, I’m spreading this far and wide. I’m so sick of Republican corruption up here, I could scream. There’s no doubt in my mind that this election was “fixed” here. They would do anything to prevent that filibuster-proof majority.

  23. I was convinced of this fraud on election eve when I heard Dave Dittman on the radio talking about how the vote would come in. He talked about the D’s winning in the Bush and the R’s easily winning Anchorage. This seems to be the opposite of most elections, and listening to Channel 2’s coverage they seemed to think that the opposite was conventional wisdom.

Could Dittman have known something that we didn’t? He was already named in at least one of the corruption cases (or at least talked about as Pollster A), why should we think he’s above being somehow involved in something like this.

He was on the radio again yesterday, and for the results in the Presidential race to hold true basically only Democrats didn’t show up to vote. The same number of Rs and R voting non-partisans showed up as normal, but 40,000 less D voters showed up. Podcast Fagan from yesterday for more.

And you didn’t even mention Wainright. There’s rock solid proof that something is wrong with the vote out there.

  24. Heard you on the radio in California (KPFA Berkeley) and you’ve inspired me! Great work and a great sense of humor. Keep it up !!! We are with you here in the lower 48.

  25. Technically, it’s a decrease of 13 percent in voter turnout, not 11 percent. (It’s a decrease of 11 “percentage points,” as the statisticians say.) For all the reasons you mention, that is highly unlikely.

Is it really possible that in this election nearly 41,000 FEWER Alaskans went to the polls than in 2004? It’s laughable.

  26. My guess? That something curious occurred not this year, but in the 2004 election. It strikes me as possible that 2004 is the outlier, based just on the info you presented here.

  27. I voted for Obama, Begich, and Young… Whenever a dem loses, people always want to cry conspiracy. Begich and Stevens were actually neck and neck until the final day or two before the election, which was very accurate and has proven to be extremely accurate… the 8 point bump you are talking about right before the election was hoky poky, people dont want to admit they are voting for felon. As far as Don Young and Berkowitz, those numbers were skewed bc its obvious they were polling people in anchorage… I have been saying for a long time that berkowitz is unelectable. He is too far left for this state. But for you to claim that there is fraud here just because the polls were off is very typical left wing spin…

  28. Interesting stats. But maybe exactly what it look like-that many decided not to vote. Despite the long lines in some parts of the county, the total tally, while a record, was not quite as high as it could have been. Apparently, in some of those red states in the midwest where McCain was heavily favored, voter turnout was lower than usual.

  29. I would like to know what we can do to push this into the light? I don’t doubt at all that the GOP would try to pull something fishy up here, and I want this potential problem to get the exposure it deserves.

  30. My instincts are to agree with you that something is very wrong, but I have to ask: Is it possible that turnout really was way down, that people were disgusted by the corruption and stayed home?

  31. at phil: if that were true you would have expected to see a democratic bump… not the democrats doing almost 10 points worse than predicted.
i went to the polls when they opened at 7 am, like usual and there were already 20 people there. usually there’s four or five others. i didn’t go back and check if it was busy there all day. but the results showed a 26 percent turnout in my heavily democratic precinct and that mc cain won by a thin margin. hard to believe and contrary to expectations after an extreme bump in interest on super tuesday and good turnout in the august primary. i did notice they were making people without ID vote questioned ballots [that’s the same as a provisional ballot, they’re not called that here].

  32. I’m going to email this to Rachel Maddow’s show. I’m a geeky fan like that – of you and her. But I left a note at Gryphen’s blog about those regions of Alaska that were forced to evacuate due to energy costs. Were any of the ballots missing or unaccounted for coming from or disqualified from those citizens? Because the number is suspiciously small. In other words, would account for a small community. And, from what I have read at Real Alaska, many of the native Alaskans aren’t particularly pleased with the governor’s track record with native issues. So if the displaced natives/AK citizens are casting provisional ballots that are either being “lost” or disqualified because of “address issues”, that’s a big stinker. Like “dead moose in Arizona July heat” stinker.

  33. Thanks so much for this post. It’s not just Alaska. These rotten anomalies were everywhere. We beat them overall with the tremendous turnout, but they still tried to steal it.

I’m asking people to start a push to eliminate touchscreens and demand a verified vote by paper ballot immediately so we don’t have to go through this anymore. Please do what you can to start a movement in your states.

  34. I’m not as surprised as you are I guess because by the time most Alaskans got off work Tuesday, the election had been decided. It was 6PM in Alaska when John McCain delivered his concession speach. Well before that two critical states in any bid McCain hoped to mount had already been forecatsed as Obama wins – Pennsylvania and Ohio, with Iowa and Virgina coming next. These were known early in the Alaska afternoon. This race wasn’t even close and had been decided shortly after lunch.

No real hurry to go vote for Stevens – better not to vote for a felon at all than to vote for someone else.

Stevens had dissapointed, and Palin was a lost cause..

Nothing was stolen, it was simply lost..

  35. […] Oh, wait – there may be reason to suspect some other explanation: Perhaps it was stolen? […]

  36. Shannyn,

I don’t think there’s anything evil going-on here. I think that the four hour time zone differential with the east coast (which meant that it was pretty clear that Obama won before our polls closed) combined with Sarah being on the ‘R’ ticket (our electoral votes were never in question; the wingnuts still turned out to cast a vote for the home team) meant fewer voters at the polls.

I also think that having Berkowitz down ticket didn’t exactly help Begich’s GOTV, much less get fence-sitters to fill in the oval next to Mark’s name. Begich is still close enough that he can still pull this off…fingers crossed.

To recap, an obvious national Obama win combined with an equally obvious Alaska McCain win didn’t help the turnout. A poor D congressional candidate hurt the excellent D senatorial candidate.

Ideas for the future: Let’s do something with our state’s polling hours (the same as the west coast through legislation) and choose a D who is not Ethan Berkowitz to run against Don Young in 2010.

  37. I’m glad to see you are on top of things Shannyn. That doesn’t jive with what I saw on Caucus night.

How do we go about demanding a hand recount on all votes statewide? It will be worth every penny to have the truth. I’ll gladly donate a few bucks for Democracy–a few hours too.

  38. Say, shannynmoore, do you have any, you know, actual proof, or just supposition and conspiracy?

On another note, do you support forcing Virginia, which screwed up in sending out the ballots to the overseas troops, to accept the ballots from them? Sure, it won’t change anything, but, hey, count every vote, right?

  39. Shannyn – I was a poll watcher for this election, a volunteer (for the Ds) and spent 15 hours Tuesday watching for any election fraud or anomaly in House District 26 (Anchorage, west side). Turnout was low – of the 1200 registered voters in that precinct, about 550 voted. Another 66 voted questioned ballots. Every ballot was properly handled; the touch-screen machine was not even used. In the middle of the afternoon, when the results of the Presidential election were announced (I suspect, we were in a news blackout in the polling place) the trickle of voters slowed even more. Of the over 300 identified D supporters on the list I had in front of me, not even 100 voted. I know there were some 200 volunteers doing what I was doing and most likely more from the Rs.

It stinks that so few people voted, but in my small precinct, it was all on the up and up.

  40. […] vote to the point of breaking the law and voting twice, or there’s something very very wrong. (From Shannyn Moore) There are 40 districts in Alaska. The Anchorage area districts run from District 17 to District 32. […]

  41. Alaska is the wild wild northwest. Where are Marshall Dillon and Wyatt Earp?

  42. There’s no problem with Alaska Elections. I KNOW the people counting the ballots. They are on PAPER not on machines.
The election was pretty much over before the polls even closed in Alaska…hence the low voter turnout. Why vote if your vote won’t count?
As for Stevens, many Alaskans feel his “trial” was purely political, timed to benefit Democrats. He wasn’t tried IN Alaska and was denied that privilege. So many people voting for him was a direct backlash against perceived unfair political attacks against the Alaska delegation. Stevens is our friend and neighbor and has tirelessly worked for our benefit. Palin was railroaded by the media.

  43. About the 2004 results. I believe the % turnout numbers are an artifact of the spreadsheet. The “% turnout” column is clearly “Cards Cast” divided by “Reg Voters”. A few columns to the right appears “Total Votes”, which is almost exactly half of “Cards Cast”.

Two card ballot, “% Turnout” is miscalculated — it’s really cards per registered voter, and the true turnout is about 1/2, or 50-60%.

    Stupid spreadsheet.

  44. anita — one might argue that a vote for pres from alaska never “counts”. the outcome is always decided before the polls close here and the three electoral votes always go to the republicans.
the idea that the democrats would stay home, with the senate and house races competitive for the first time in decades, is nuts.
as is the idea of there being a conspiracy against stevens.
and the media did palin in? nonsense. she was her own worse enemy.

  45. keep chasing this. i was just over at 538 reading the post about alaska’s numbers and what they point out that i find interesting is that ALL of the races in alaska are off by the same percentage difference between projected and “actual.”

    that’s pretty smelly.

and i’ve looked at the official alaska voting page — never since they’ve been able to show percentage of registered voters who voted has a presidential election year had turnout that low — and it’s even low for a non-presidential election year.

i’m counting on you, shannon, to report further when you can.

  46. Anita-

If you know the people counting the votes and you use quotes when describing Ted’s trial, and think “Stevens is our friend and neighbor and has tirelessly worked for our benefit. Palin was railroaded by the media” it really doesn’t make me feel any better. In fact your confidence that things were legit only makes me more confident they weren’t.

As for why D’s would turn out to vote even though it was over. Maybe they wanted to be a part of history, there were almost 21,000 new registered voters, people wanted to vote for Obama even if it was over already. If anyone wasn’t going to show up on Tuesday it wasn’t the Dem voters who had an exciting candidate that they were anxious to vote for. I would think it would be the Republican leaning voters who have the guy who placed 3rd in the Alaska Republican Primary, a convicted felon, and a guy under investigation in several states.

  47. Palin was “railroaded by the media”?!? are you kidding me?! If she was railroaded by anything OTHER than her incompetence, lack of intellectual fortitude, or seemingly disregard for fundamental truths (like global warming, the Constitutional role of the Vice President), it may stand to reason she was railroaded by Republicans with a conscience.

  48. Great post Shannyn!

Something is wrong with all these….

  49. they asked questions!
ones they knew she wouldn’t be able to answer.

  50. As someone who is pretty new to this country, I keep on wondering, why is all that bothering just a few people (compared to how many people actually ARE participating on the elections)? I try everything I can to understand this country better, but I have no idea why people are not going ape shit? Every 4 years again?

  51. Smells to high heaven, keep pushing for answers. There needs to be an overhaul of the voting process as a whole. Good luck to you.

  52. FYI.

Mike Gravel was defeated in the 1980 primary by Clark Gruening who would himself lose to Republican Frank Murkowski in the general election.

  53. http://stopalaskavoterfraud.blogspot.com/

Shannyn, we seem to have a common cause.

    We ought to talk.

Pop an email to my obviously fake gmail address and we’ll chat.

  54. […] 7, 2008 by orangehairboy I read an interesting post today from Shannyn Moore: looks like there may be some serious missing votes in Alaska.  No proof here, folks, but she […]

  55. omg, grow up you left wing turds. every time a conservative wins, it’s ” stolen”?! i hate to think what you morons would do if mccain had won. good god, get over it.

  56. Damn right something smells. I ain’t buyin’ it…no way in hell could voter turnout have been lower than 2004. I worked at the polls in Homer and we were slammed all day. Granted, Homer is not the same as much of the rest of Alaska, but even so, with Palin on the ticket, and the most important election in most of our life times, I refuse to believe turnout would be lower by 13%.

We have to get to the bottom of this and send anyone found guilty of fraud to prison. There can be no refuge for any election thief, ever, in Alaska.

    Great work Shannyn!

  57. fivethirtyeight.com and mudflats led me to your blog. I am really concerned for you Alaskans. Perhaps all of us obsessive blog readers can redirect our energy for the next couple of months towards exposing voting irregularities and demanding changes.

Sign me up for whatever comes next. I’ll keep an eye on what you write about all this.

    Thanks for bringing this up.

  58. Wow. “Left wing turds”? I thought I had heard it all. That’s keepin’ it classy. It comes down to the math. NO matter what side of the political fence you defend, when the numbers don’t add up, it smells. And I’m sure you didn’t cavetch over the ACORN issue, right? Right….

  59. Our polling place was DEAD QUIET when we voted at 6:30 pm. There were MUCH bigger crowds in the evening for at least the last 2 elections.

I hate to say it but I think once it was clear Obama won, many Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents just didn’t bother to show up. My guess is a lot of people only really cared about the Obama race, and didn’t care so much about our local elections.

Not to be negative or anything.

  60. The Republicans rigged the election? So Barack Obama was elected! The Republicans rigged the outcome. You people are too stupid to have the privilege of voting.

  61. This Alabamian just discovered this site tonight. Great, and I”ll be revisiting regularly. I have visited Alaska including Talkeetna & Kodiak, where my brother lives.

Stolen election article will be of great interest to my husband who was is very upset over the Stevens returns, and finds them inconsistent with the alleged popularity of Palin’s “clean up corruption” reputation. To be clear, hubby is a Libertarian who dislikes Obama but voted for him anyway because he was terrified at Palin being a hearbeat away from the presidency.

I am a stickler for fact checks. Is there a user-friendly way to check the sources for the stolen election figures?

  62. I voted in Homer at 7am the place was packed, when it came time to put the ballot in the counting machine, they said it was jammed and put the ballot into an open slot beneath the counting machine. They said it would be counted later….I’m not saying there was anything wrong it was just out of the ordinary.. but I was suprised by the low total vote count

  63. Great information! Thanks for posting!

  64. I missed this on my first read, and it supports my suspicions: “…but it strikes me as odd that well over a thousand Alaskans would wait in long lines and not cast a vote in either the senate race or the congressional race-especially since there was only one ballot measure. ”

For some people, I really do think it was all about Obama.

  65. Shannyn,
I don’t know if you remember our talk at Election Central, but I left my Don Young/Ethan Berkowitz ballot blank and voted the rest of the ballot. That is called a protest vote.

  66. Do not stop blogging about this. Do not stop blogging about this. Do NOT stop blogging about this.

Take your outrage down a step, explain facts simply, and repeat them. Keep repeating them.

You have to break through, and to break through you have to keep hammering at the wall.

There are obviously ballots missing. Find them.

Just because our guy won the Presidency, doesn’t mean we should back off on these voting problems.

  67. I was a poll watcher during the 2004 campaign. One of the things I noticed was: At the precinct I was a poll watcher at, they always had little old ladies manning everything – there were 4 or 5. You came in and you gave one little old lady your ID and you signed the printout by your name. The ladies who checked your ID had a stack of yellow cards laying on the table in front of the them. She gave you a yellow card. You took that yellow card over and you were supposed to give it to another little old lady. She was supposed to take the yellow card and hand you a ballot; you went and voted, etc.

Then I would see people going out the door with the yellow cards and I would chase them down to get the yellow card back. I caught only the ones I saw; but, how many took those cards and put them in their pocket.

My take on it is: A person leaves with a yellow card. All they have to do is come back later when it gets busy. Bypass the line. Bypass the ID check. Go to the little old lady handing out the ballots (maybe she will take the yellow card, maybe she won’t – depends on how frazzled she is or who she is visiting with). She hands you a ballot. You go in and vote again. Wha-La! You’re out of there again. And, hey, if you still got your yellow card – you can go back again.

I don’t know if this was the practice followed at other precincts or not. But if it was the yellow card method, hey, you could go all over town and keep voting, especially if you grabbed some of those yellow cards laying on the table in front of the little old ladies checking your ID.

So, is it possible this election might be rigged? Sure wouldn’t surprise me, especially if Republicans are involved manning those precincts and the “yellow card” method is still used.

By the way – great article!

  68. Hey, I did the yellow card thing too.

    Weird.

  69. Hi Shannyn,

I just wanted to comment and say GREAT ARTICLE! Hopefully the MSM pick this up! It just DOESN’T make sense. Questions need to be asked…and answers must be demanded.

  70. pajamas: “The Republicans rigged the election? So Barack Obama was elected! The Republicans rigged the outcome. You people are too stupid to have the privilege of voting.”
maybe they realized there was no way to stop obama and they shifted their resources to the next best thing: keeping the number of democratic senators under 60.
mikey: “I hate to say it but I think once it was clear Obama won, many Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents just didn’t bother to show up. My guess is a lot of people only really cared about the Obama race, and didn’t care so much about our local elections.”
but, it was the first time in decades that stevens and young were vulnerable, and both begich and berkowitz were leading in the polls well beyond the margin of polling error. why would democrats not care about this historic opportunity?

  71. really: “omg, grow up you left wing turds. every time a conservative wins, it’s ‘stolen’?! i hate to think what you morons would do if mccain had won. good god, get over it.”
when all the votes are counted, the democrats win. that’s now the general rule most everyplace but the bible belt and utah.
let’s see what happens in ’10 and ’12, smarty.

  72. I did exit polls on Tuesday. There was a huge line at my precinct prior to the polls opening at 7am. After about 7:30am it was DEAD the rest of the day. This is the third presidental election I have done exit polls for, and it was very clear to me that turnout was WAY down. In fact, the officials at my site were very perplexed.

Get over your conspiracy theorys and get a life. Would someone be crying foul if the Senate and House races had gone the the other way? Doubtful. For goodness sake, even the pollsters were suprprised at the low turnout. Ask the officials who were there – the voters didn’t show!!!

The liberals have got Obama, and quite frankly you can have him. His economic policies and socialistic plans should be a concern for all Americans. If I wanted to live in a place like Canada or Britain or some other socialist country, I wouldn’t be living here. Perhaps you should check out some other countries for yourself if you’re unhappy with this one…

  73. Mrs. Moore,
I have an incident that might help answer some questions about the elections numbers. I voted early at the Board of Elections on Gamble St. here in Anchorage. I entered and signed some documents and then was given my ballot. Upon completing my selections on my ballot I walked over to a table where I believed I was to drop off my ballot. However unlike my normal polling place where I submit my ballot into a machine. I noticed that it was just a table with a cardboard box and a slit at the top. When I asked the lady at the table “is this where I place my ballot” she nodded and pointed to the cardboard box. I then placed my ballot inside the box. I couldn’t help noticing that there appeared to be other ballots in the box. Though I found that to be strange, I thought no more of it until the news of the low voter count. I now can’t help but believe that my vote may have not been counted. This is in deed a shame if unknowingly there were voters that may have done the same thing that I did.

  74. Adorfo, i voted early also, i understand your concern, but early votes are not counted until election day. They are supposed to be put in that box and kept safe until election day and then counted when the polls close.

As for you not being sure if your vote was counted, i don’t think mine was either! This does stink, I would accept that stevens has won, if all else were equal, but it is not! Shannon was right, there were thousands of people at that democratic caucus, I knocked on doors for hours on sunday in my precinct and talked to hundreds of democrats that either were very excited about voting, or already had voted. they were voting for obama, begich, berckowitz, and val baffone for state house, Boffone got creamed! I just do not understand it. Even Bob and Mark, the Palin lovers were supporting Begich and Berkowitz, they were both on the show many times, and they had great interviews. I guess all we can do is wait, but regardless, This election was a sham, i am convinced.

  75. To the argument that turnout was way down because the election was decided by 7:00 ak time, Hawaii’s voter turnout was only 1.1% down from 2004. how would our turnout be 14% lower than 2004!

There was a much bigger democratic effort this election year than any other year, the DNC put lots of money into Begich and Berkowitzs campaigns, while normally the dem candidates get nill up here.

It doesn’t make sense, and i don’t see why it is such a big “conspiracy” to think it was rigged.

  76. Whether the stats are right or wrong, a hand recount will settle the issue, and restore confidence in our election process.

  77. Of all the states to have challenged ballots. Voter fraud is virtually non-existent. It’s a Republican red herring. In a state with accessibility problems as Alaska has, it is beyond absurd.

  78. Oh boy. I was having bad dreams about Alaska for months! I predicted something was something very wrong going on up there in Alaska. But I don’t think we’ve seen the last of that shadow just yet. I have some predictions about Alaska on my blog: astrologyandpsychicpredictions.wordpress.com
Thanks for posting this story! I would love to see more info as you get it.
    Best wishes to you.

  79. Hey there Real Person, you sound more like a Real Asshole. Just like Sarah Palin. Have you seen all her new Duds yet, the ones she ripped off from the NRC. Not that I care because I’m a Democrat. But she sure is a con artist. She’s one Trashy Screech Owl. And she thinks she will run again in 2012. HA!! She might be liked by the moronic religious right, but the majority of the people here hate her. We’ll give her a welcome party that she never imagined. Geez, I really feel sorry for the real people of Alaska. It took us 8 years to get rid of Bush and Palin is Bush in a Skirt.

  82. y sou mui enteligente

  83. Was there exit polling in Alaska?

  84. Speaking for all lower 48 liberals (which I have no right to do, but will anyway), I say ignore the shouts of those who want you to stop investigating this. Maybe the vote was legitimate, maybe it wasn’t, but we’re all Americans, damn it. We have a right to know that all of our vote were counted fairly and honestly.

So from all of us down here, go get ’em. Keep us informed, and let us know how we can help!

  85. Sarah Palin in the Senate would be a good thing. It’s the best of both worlds. We get Obama for President, and we don’t lose any of the jokes! It’s perfect. I told my wife as soon as it was reveled on how it would work in Alaska, should Stevens win, that Sarah was coming to Washington.

She will be not only humiliated, but discredited beyond repair. I know the Republicans like to think she is bright, but my 7 year old knows the globe better than she does.

For me at least I have that same giddy feeling I got when they put her on the ticket. All the Republicans got excited and so did I. They thought she was great, and so did I… for Obama. This woman has no substance, and to the real American women, that believe in equality for women, she just pisses them off, for making them all look a little less credible.

I feel bad for Sarah that she does not have someone close enough to her, that will tell her the truth about the mistake she is about to make. She has the potential for not only damaging the GOP brand, but women in Politics in general. If she’s smart, and she’s not, she will stay away from Washington.

  86. Carrie:

Do you propose that we do away with the biggest socialist program in America – public education?

  87. I’ll defer to your knowledge of Alaskan politics but wouold like to suggest you compare the 2008 election with election results in 1976 and 1980, the Carter and Reagan – both contests were decided early as was this years – Media reporting clearly affected late voter turnout in those elections – Isn’t it possible the same thing occurred here. I’d note two specific things –
    1) you note lower voter participation by both parties and 2) I don’t know when the Alaskan polls closed, but Ohio was called very early for Obama, essentially ending what little suspense remained in the evening.

  88. Right on! Keep posting this great information…

  89. Right on! I’m glad you wrote about this because it is important. Just because our man won doesn’t mean there weren’t shenanigans. A lot of people don’t care because Barack won anyway but we need to realize that these kind of things are important whether your guy benefits or doesn’t because if we can’t trust our elections we no longer have representative form of government. It’ll be decided by those with the power and they’ll allow us our vote just to maintain the illusion that our votes count. Sorry, I’m usually a better writer than this, need some sleep.

  90. mc cauley: still not buying that explanation. alaska never, ever gets to be meaningfully involved in the selection of the president. as an alaska democrat i have been going to the polls every two years since 1980 trying to unseat don young. came pretty close in 1990 but not since then. the idea that any alaska dem would sit this one out because obama was already a foregone conclusion is crazy!

  92. […] November 7, 2008 · No Comments We always knew they were corrupt in Alaska. They are stealing everything else. Why not elections? Here the jist of Alaskan native Shannyn Moore’s rant. See full rant here. […]

  93. There are two key points about Alaska:

    1) Turnout was down, and that should be satisfactorily explained. The “already knew the outcome” canard doesn’t satisfy because Alaska often knows the outcome by the end of their voting day, and they still go out and vote. AND there were 2 other big elections on the ballot statewide. AND one of the candidates for Veep was an Alaskan.

    2) THREE SEPARATE RACES showed major disparities between the polling data and the actual vote totals. ALL THREE RACES favored statewide Republicans by MORE THAN 10% vs. the polling.

Talk to statisticians — what are the chances of such a thing happening?

    You go Girl from Homer!!!

  94. Of course it was rigged. FEAR AND MONEY IS THE HOW. Now they are acting like the MOB . Look at Joe Lieberman and now they are telling him ether you side with us or we will crush you by taking away all of the chairs you sit on. On Jan 20th 2008 no inauguration on a coronation.
Unless we call for a recounnt and also call for the vote of those serving over seas. THEY DID NOT GET TO VOTE BUT THEY CAN DIE FOR US. We keep forgeting IT IS BY THE PEOPLE FOR THE PEOPLE . We are the PEOPLE. nWe have the voice they only have power because we act like SHEEP. I have been writing every congress memeber on the GOP asking what they are going to do and asking for an recount on this matter. We held up the 2004 for bad voting machines but we CANT FOR THE BRAVE MEN AND WOMEN SERVING TO FIGHT FOR THAT VERY FREEDOM.
Below is a letter I sent to the leg breaker they sent after Joe Lieberman Harry Reid.
You know what’s really bad for AMERICA. You and your goons. You all claim to be for the people but with what you are doing to Sen. Joe Lieberman is a shame. We have the right to free speech, we have the right to choose who we support and the right to do so with no punishment from the government . As granted by the Constitution. If there is only one party in control then you have ether a dictatorship or a monarchy. Ether way is NOT THIS COUNTRY. It is WE the People not we the democrats. You all seem to forget you are there to serve us the American Public at the request by us by way of election. Not by or for any other reason . If you and your party think that you will herd us like sheep you are sadly mistaken. In two years you will ether do the job right or by the power of the vote you will find yourselves voted out of office. I am voicing my right to free speech as toyou and your party That is guaranteed by the Constitution of The United States of America. And if you don’t like it take the advice of one of your supporters Martha Stewart and SUCK IT UP.

  98. Thank you Shannyn! As the first forced “retirement” of the Sarah Palin Administration (so called) and a witness to what she represents and those negative, elemental, forces who supported her, I feel this election, however flawed, has still gotten us started on reclaiming so much that can be good about our country and Alaska, again. I only hope other Alaskans follow through on the issues you raise. Best wishes to you and all Alaskans of integrity and good will! John

  99. Liberals are so funny…The election is over, you won and you are still complaining. Acorn got caught of multiple counts of voter fraud…they are a left wing organization who somehow get government funding…and they were caught cheating.

When Bush won in 2000, Liberals fought it for a month and loss in the courts. Never did the Democrats accept George Bush as President…now most republicans are giving Obama a chance and we are accepting him as our President Elect and wish him and the USA much success while Democrats continue to bash Palin in the GOP. Get over it and be good winners because ya are terrible losers..

  100. I had a chance meeting with a fellow prior to the 2004 election who said that he left Diebold because he didn’t like what was going on there. We were just talking about where we worked. I never saw him again. I remembered this conversation after things started to come out after the election. I still wonder if he knew something.

Also, I wonder if the big hoopla about ACORN on the part of the Repubs was just a smoke screen to muddy the waters. ??

  101. What are we going to do to change how the votes are made and what kind of machines or paper we are going to use? One major problem is there is not one way a vote can be cast. As a matter of fact, many different machines and ballots were used in this election. The first thing we must do is demand a national system that is the same from county to county and state to state. That way everyone knows just how it will be counted and what kind of ballot or machine will be used. I feel that there is and has been some under handed bad use of the machines and would much rather see going back to all paper ballots!

  102. Shannyn, I had the same experience as Mellisa posted above (Nov 6 @ 2:04 pm). I was a poll watcher ( for the Ds also) in House District 31. I was at the precinct from 1:45 pm until 9:00 pm. Everything was properly handled. 604 voted with another 68 question ballots. 155 of the 672 votes were cast after 4:30 pm (when I took a tally). Poll workers and I were surprised how slow it was after work and up to the 8:00 pm poll close. We figured it was a 50% turnout for the precinct.

  103. Dennis –

We are always going to need some form of public education if we are going to educate our society because some parents wouldn’t do the job and that’s not fair to the children who don’t have the means to educate themselves. However, I think there needs to be some major changes. It is fast becoming a cesspool. Education would be much better if there were competition, choice, and if parents were forced to be involved. Unfortunately, we can’t require parents to care, and that is one of the biggest problems in our country today.

Therefore, I am an advocate for competition and choice in public education -ie. the voucher system. And I’m not just ranting, I am a former public school teacher who is currently substitute teaching, and my husband is a public school teacher. Both of our children, however, were homeschooled for a few years and are now in private school.

    Vinnie from Indy –

Yes there is exit polling in AK. Our votes do matter up here – maybe more so in the senate and house than the presidental race since we only have 3 electoral votes for the presidency, but they still matter and count. The exit polls are conducted by an independent company who then releases the results to the major media organizations: ABC, AP, CBS, CNN, FOX, & NBC.

  104. Carrie:

First you say you’re against socialism, like public education, then you say you’re for socialism. In fact, you and your husband made a living from socialism. No wonder our school system is so screwed up, look who the teachers are.

  105. Let’s go to a vote-by-mail system like Oregon has. They have a great turnout and no complaints of voter fraud. See this article:
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A40032-2004Dec31.html

Considering the convience for voters and Alaska weather, it would be a great system for us. I would like to see a petition in Alaska to go to this innovative form of voting. We need to check our vote counting machines. It has been proven that at the very least, electronic voting machines CAN be compromised very easily.

  106. Isn’t it possible voter turnout was lower because people already knew the results long before the polls closed?

    OBAMA!!!

  107. wow! found you on Rachel Maddow. hooray. love your straight-forward thinking and writing. will be watching to see how your citizens handle this latest debacle: Begich/Stevens–Berkowitz/Young, or, the entire 2008 election. love the actions taken over the 2006 vote. how about all-paper, hand-counted ballots everywhere for everyone? Michael Moore says Canada does all paper!!!

  108. How you think when the economic crisis will end? I wish to make statistics of independent opinions!

  109. the only election that was stolen was in mn. where al frankin stole it

  110. Hi, for a while now I’ve been trying to get people in Alaska to notice that Shannyn Moore was probably correct and that the 2008 election results in Alaska were fraudulent, but it’s been an uphill battle against my Asperger’s Syndrome, which keeps me from articulating the my case clearly and succinctly in emails or phone calls.

More to the point it’s likely that the electoral fraud was ordered by Sarah Palin and the threat of this being revealed in 2009 precipitated her resignation.

I’ve prepared this blog/Youtube Channel laying out my evidence, and am now passing it around to all the Progressive/Political AK bloggers I can find.

    http://electoralfraudinalaska2008.wordpress.com

I hope you’ll look at it carefully and consider sharing on your blog. The case is complex and technical, but you can get by by watching/reading Introduction, Evidence 3 and maybe 4, and the first Conclusion video/blog post.

Hope you find the info interesting,

    John Foelster

  111. […] (From Shannyn Moore) There are 40 districts in Alaska. The Anchorage area districts run from District 17 to District 32. The Democrats ALSO sought to have the Alaska Division of Elections release the raw election data for the 2006 election. […]
