SURVIVOR JUNEAU

By the day, the Alaska State Government is beginning to resemble an episode of Survivor. There are 2 tribes; the Red Tribe and the Blue Tribe. There are reward challenges and immunity challenges. There is Tribal Council. People get voted off the Island. There are strategies and strange alliances; hidden agendas.

After Day One of Attorney General Hearings, folks in Juneau are looking around the room to see if it’s just them…or does everyone else realize Palin’s appointee, Wayne Anthony Ross, is not quite right. He’s better suited for an immunity challenge that would have him wrestling with Levi Johnston. Johnston, meanwhile, is on a tell-all media tour after he earned permanent immunity for fathering Palin’s grandchild.  Instead of publicly scolding Levi, the governor should send him a thank you card for distracting the national tribe.

Many have already been voted off the Island. Former AG, Talis Colberg voted himself off the Island-in a sort of kamikaze hara kiri act to save the Queen. Then there was Tim Grussendorf. He went before the Alaska Survivor Tribal Council and was voted off once it was learned he was a mole from the other tribe. Joe Nelson is the next player to appear on Survivor Juneau. His fate is to be determined. Everyone plays this game. The Governor, in fact, tried to promote herself to the Big Island and was voted off by the National Survivor Tribal Council.

But back to W.A.R. His own testimony reveals a racist, abrasive, interrupting bully, completely paranoid about the federal government. I imagine Wayne and Todd throwing back beers around a fire, trading secession strategies. I knew W.A.R. was a colorful character, and by that, I mean controversial candidate, but didn’t know the depth and extent of his pathology.

“Subtle like a chainsaw,” is a phrase my pop used to say. Palin’s pick must have had Husqvarna and Stihl for parents. VROOM! VROOM! Her choice should have her gender card recalled. The legislature, acting as the Alaska Survivor Tribal Council, need to form an alliance and reject Wayne Anthony Ross for Attorney General. Send W.A.R. back to his bunker…let him count his guns, and mutter about how the ERA took rights away from men. Time to vote him off the island.

My friend, Mudflats has meticulously dissected the words of W.A.R.

The following is a testimonial letter from Leah Burton. Realize as you are reading her words, she is talking about a man who would be, if Sarah Palin has her way, the Attorney General of our state; the highest law officer in the land. A man who condoned rape? WTF?

April 7, 2009

My name is Leah Burton. My father is former Commissioner of Public Safety, Richard L. Burton, who served under both Governor Hammond and Governor Hickel. I grew up in a law enforcement environment. Mr. Ross testimony today in response to Senator Hollis’ questions about domestic violence and sexual assault victims enhances my testimony as to his prejudice on this very serious topic, especially given that, “Alaska rates among the top 5 states in the nation for per capita rates of domestic violence.” (FBI/UCR 2007)

From 1989 through 1997 I lobbied on behalf of families and children in Alaska with regard to child support, custody, abuse, abandonment and neglect. In the course of that time my efforts put me in conflict with a group known then as the Dads Against Discrimination (DADS), and later renamed the Alaska Family Support Group.

Mr. Ross is one of the most successful attorneys in Alaska in his representation of the members of this organization and others who sought to avoid payment of child support through several means, not the least of which was to fight for custody.

In 1991, the DADS group held an area wide meeting at a Denny’s Restaurant in Anchorage near DeBarr & Bragaw. I chose to go and sit in the main area of the restaurant near the opening of the meeting room where they convened so I was able to hear what they had to say and find out what plans they had for the upcoming legislative session.

At that point they still did not know what I looked like so I was able to sit there unnoticed. The meeting was well attended, Steve Strube was the head of the group at that time and another known member, John Grames (who Strube referred to as his Lt.), was also in attendance along with enough other members to fill the room. They were delighted to have Wayne Anthony Ross in attendance as a guest speaker.

Numerous comments were made that were appalling, not the least of which were remarks by Mr. Ross which included the following; “If a guy can’t rape his wife…who’s he gonna rape?” and “There wouldn’t be an issue with domestic violence if women would learn to keep their mouths shut.”

Other members made their own contributions such as, “We have the right to discipline our wives and children without the interference of government in our lives!”

These comments were greeted with laughter and affirmative responses by the group. Given the fact that they had referred to me in recent months as a “femi-nazi”, the comments I was witness to at this meeting, while abhorrent, were unfortunately not surprising.

This announcement by Governor Palin is a slap in the face to all single parents who have no choice but to rely upon the State Department of Law to support court orders for child support, as well as those persons who need the Department to enforce criminal laws against sexual assault and domestic violence. Mr. Ross is the antithesis of the type of person that should be the Attorney General. This has been clearly demonstrated by his own words and actions in public.

In closing, I am not alone in my assessment that anyone who condones, and contributes to that type of hateful and harmful discourse clearly does not have the judgment necessary to represent the people of the State of Alaska as their Attorney General.

Given his other special interests and his stated opposition to subsistence rights and other Alaska Native issues, I have brought this forth as yet another dimension of Mr. Ross’ demonstrated inability to represent all the people of the State of Alaska fairly and impartially.

His clear racial and gender prejudice raise serious concerns with regard to his ability to represent all residents of the State of Alaska fairly and impartially as their Attorney General.

  1. What an asshole.

I feel like I should apologize for my entire gender.

I am sorry there are men like this in the world.

  2. Truly an embarrassment.

    The man has no HONOR!

  3. Holy shit! Isn’t saying stuff like that, umm, illegal or something? It sounds an awful lot like incitement to commit (hate) crimes.

  4. I consider him to be a reflection of the Palin Political Platform. She’s been waiting all this time to speak her mind, and now she’s got WAR to do it for her. Besides, Sarah’s Circus needed to put another monkey on her back and he spoons in there quite nicely.

  5. Numerous comments were made that were appalling, not the least of which were remarks by Mr. Ross which included the following; “If a guy can’t rape his wife…who’s he gonna rape?” and “There wouldn’t be an issue with domestic violence if women would learn to keep their mouths shut.”
    ————————————————-
I apologise for my language in advance…but Jesus!!

  6. Also, too, the fact that he’s declared that the Federal Gov’t. is the ENEMY that he will go after with his junk yard dogs. OMG!

  7. Unbelievable! What is it with this woman? I feel like we’re playing a collective game of whack-a-mole…Just when we whack Palin…she pops her head up somewhere else.

    She is the damn terminator…indestructible…

    REJECT WAYNE ANTHONY ROSS…

btw…aren’t murderers usually referred to by their first middle and last names?

  8. Great post, and to be honest, I am so pissed that I can not leave a comment because I can cuss as bad with my fingers and with my mouth and I won’t disrespect you space that way.

I truly hope people open their eyes to see what Gino and Warthog are trying to accomplish.

  9. I am so sorry for the people of Alaska. From what I’ve been reading of the confirmation hearing and those on the confirmation committee, this guy is going to be confirmed. All I can say is….he’ll do his best to make Palin unelectable. He, as an example of her “judgement” will affirm that she is totally clueless and her judgement is worse than poor, it is abhorrent. I only hope the poor people of Alaska can survive until the next Governor’s election; until the new incumbant can fire War’s a$$.

  10. And interestingly enough, the middle name is freqently Wayne: http://freakonomics.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/03/27/the-middle-name-wayne-strikes-again/

  11. Shannyn can I use part of this post to send to US Attorney General? And to link it?

    *****you betcha!*********

  12. ALASKANS! How to make your wishes known to the committees in charge of confirming Wayne Anthony Ross:

First, there are two Judiciary Committees, the Senate Judiciary Committee and the House Judiciary Committee. Each committee has a Committee Aide. The BEST way to make sure your request becomes part of the permanent record is to email or fax the Committee Aide. It is then the Aide who prepares the packets, which go to the Committee and are entered into the public record. This is the simplest; fastest way to make sure your comments are recorded (they do need to be timely).

Second, I asked the House Judiciary Aide, Jane Pierson, if there was a difference in the type of contact a constituent makes to the legislative body such as letter, fax, email, Public Opinion Message system, phone call or personal visit. Jane said that as LONG AS THEY ARE RECORDED as part of the permanent record, then any method of contact carries the same weight as any other. For obvious reasons to Alaskans, a personal visit would not carry more “heft” than any other form of contact because you’d have to be in the capital city to do so.

The Senate Judiciary Committee had their hearing with the acting AG yesterday, Weds the 8th. The House Judiciary Committee meets tomorrow, Friday the 10th for their hearing. Then, the full confirmation with both bodies present happens on the following Thursday, April 16th.

Right now, emailing the Committee Aide for the House Judiciary Committee is the most time sensitive since they meet tomorrow. However, it’s not too late as per Jane Pierson to ALSO email the Committee Aide for the Senate Judiciary Committee – just make sure it’s prior to the full confirmation hearing on Thurs April 16th.

If you have already contacted legislators regarding your comments about the acting AG, there is no need to send another… UNLESS you have any NEW reasons that you do, or do not, want Wayne Anthony Ross to be confirmed.

Reps Ramras, Dahlstrom, Coghill, Gatto, Lynn, Gruenberg, and Holmes

SENATE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE – met for confirmation April 8
    Cindy Smith, Committee Aide
    cindy_smith AT legis.state.ak.us

Senators French, Wielechowski, (Elton = no one), McGuire and Therriault

  13. Thanks for letting me borrow that from Mudflats. Also, we were informed that it is SAFER to contact the Legislative Committees in Juneau primarily, rather than your own representative. There is always the possibility that your contact is not passed on to the Committee Aide from another source.

  14. I wonder if Palin would blame herself if SHE got raped? Never a suprise with this woman…

    http://palinaroundwithpoohpooh.blogspot.com/

  15. Has anyone looked into WAR’s records to see if he has ever been arrested for a “domestic dispute”? It would be worth knowing. I don’t know how to do such a search, but I’ll bet there is a blogger somewhere who DOES know how!

  16. Wow it is amazing isn’t it? Just when you think the Iron Maiden has lost every marble she has, another one rolls out her nose.

What a buffoon – his views are hideous however they probably DO reflect the True Palinistic Viewpoint. She is one sick puppy.

Please Alaska friends – what can we do to help? Is there someone we can help you fund to run against these idiots? Our Atty Gen is an elected official here in AZ – what’s the status if she does get this bonehead through the confirmation process.

Is anyone working on a recall election? I’ve got money to contribute!

  17. Twenty-five years ago I would have never believed that we’d still have men like this in 2009. I thought we were on our way to understanding and respect. The viewpoints expressed by WAR and friends are a throwback to yesteryear. Thank God, many have made more progress than he has. It will be a tragedy if he is confirmed. Not only will he NOT represent the rights of the people of Alaska, he will stomp on those rights and laugh while doing it.

Ms. Burton’s letter is well-written. How did she remain sane after working so long for basic rights in a place where there is so little public support for them?

  18. Problem child…if I am not mistaken..you are Canadian or at least you live or have lived here. you and I are aware that in Canada…much of what has been espoused by WAR…Beck et al, would rightfully be interpreted as “hate speech”

We do believe in freedom of speech in Canada and hold it dear. We do however, have lines that cannot by law…be crossed. Speech that incites violence….”as in I want my citizens armed and dangerous”…..or denigrating a certain population is cause for arrest and charges in some cases. Ezra Levant, who in my opinion is Canada’s Rush Limbaugh could tell us all about that.

  19. Thank you for helping to spread the word –
Choosing this … person as a potential AG for the state of Alaska is by far the most blatant sign of serious flaws in the thinking of our governor. And more succinctly to the point, we are in deep doo doo if this nonsense keeps up.

  20. It’s not “hari kari.” It’s hara kiri.

I don’t think it’s too much to ask to get another culture’s rituals spelled correctly.

***NOTE FROM SHANNY******Looks like we’re both right***********

    ha·ra-ki·ri or ha·ri-ki·ri (hăr’ĭ-kîr’ē, hä’rē-) pronunciation also ha·ri-ka·ri

  21. Sorry but the spelling is HARA KIRI–to cut (kiri) the hara (belly). I’ve never heard a Japanese speaker say “Harry Carry,” which is what you’re saying. I’d recommend you contact your local kendo club, if you have one up there in Alaska. Only Americans say “Hari Kari” because they like to mutilate the words.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hara_kiri

************THANKS H of B! You are right, I was wrong. I’ve made the adjustment…though I have no intent of committing the act over this mistake. ************************************************************

  22. House of Brat, get over yourself and address the real issue of a racist, sexist neanderthal becoming the next attorney general for the State of Alaska. This jerk will set back women’s rights, native rights, subsistence rights, etc., if he gets the post. I strongly suggest that you put your energies into his being rejected as Attorney General.

Thank you, Shannyn, for all you do to promote good and fight evil in the State of Alaska.

  23. Elsie09, you completely miss the irony in your statement. You’re complaining about a racist jerk, yet the article above not only misappropriates a Japanese ritual (hara kiri or seppuku) but uses the English/American name which is usually used to denigrate the ritual. Amazing. Simply amazing.

  24. I’ve been following Alaskan politics from Ohio since Palin was announced as the VP candidate. Some of it has been incredibly amusing, but this is sickening. I hope for the sake of Alaskan women, children, and Natives that this man won’t be confirmed. Is he being appointed because the previous attorney general resigned? It seems like something that warrants a special election or something (much like the Senate seat in Juneau…). Granted when the Ohio attorney general resigned, we got a very non-partisan OSU law school law professor to fill in for a year.

Anyways, I hope you all of you can band together and keep the ugliness of this man away from your government!

  25. The irony, Brat, is that you are so short-sighted as to take away the focus from the real issue, which is to fight the evil of Ross as the next attorney general and perpetuate more of Palin’s pettiness and hatred of good people in Alaska. Shannyn diligently works toward good; you just blather on over in your corner, mumbling to yourself about nothing of importance.

Fight evil, fight Ross, fight Palin. Bring decency and integrity into Alaskan politics.

  26. Elsie09: *eye roll* I’m not taking focus off the “real issue.” I’m stating a fact of which the author of this post, Ms. Shannyn Moore, is seemingly unaware and uninterested in correcting in her post.

If WAR is confirmed by the Alaskan legislature and acts like the turd he seems to be, then he’ll end up generating even worse publicity for Sarah Palin, who appointed him. Duh! Palin may think she’s placating her small, personality cult, but all she does is further flush her political career down the toilet. She’s just too dumb to realize this.

  27. Keep your quill sharp, your wits attuned and your blogger radar on high. It appears GINO, Todd, WAR and the other loonies are priming Alaska for secession. Your state needs you and AKM more now than ever.
This has gone waaay beyond red/blue tug of war. It is verging on the real thing if she/he gets her/his way.
    Stay strong!

  28. HofB:
Although I don’t like your patronizing methods, I do agree with your last comment but only in principle.

Yes he will generate bad publicity for the Publicity Hog she has become, however by that time, he will also be thrashing on the citizens of Alaska and perpetrating his egomaniacal overbearing misogynistic viewpoint on the citizens of that beatiful state.

It’s like Bush – yes he is gone, but for heaven’s sake look at the trash he left behind. It took 8 years to create havoc and it cannot be fixed overnight.

He is a repulsive creature (w.a.r.) but then again, a typical representative of the current state of the Republican party. The party is destructing before the eyes of our nation and it is people like the “General” (as he calls himself) that are destroying their own reputations. Letting him be confirmed just so he’ll drag down the ruling Ex-beauty 2nd Place Queen is short-sighted due to his skewed views about “punishing” women.

Their next move is to eat themselves – this should be fun!

  29. This makes me so angry I can hardly see straight!

  30. This makes me so angry I can hardly see straight! How can a guy like that get appointed? By a woman no less!

  31. On Ross’s resume, posted on his website, there is an article from the early 1990s that praised the “courage” of a KKK art project. The citation to the article is below. Someone who lives in Anchorage might see if they can locate the article. Unfortunately, it predates the electronic revolution and so does not appear to be available online.
“KKK ‘ Art’ Project Gets’ A’ For Courage”, The Anchorage Times, December 1991.

Here is the link to Ross’s publications: http://rossandminer.com/articles.html The guy has left a papertrail a mile wide. Few rightwing politicians give us such a gift.

  32. You know, sometimes when something seems so outrageous, it probably isn’t true. I would love to see your governor out of the spotlight for ever. But I was wondering, is this letter real? Don’t get me wrong, i want it to be. It’s just I can’t believe someone could think that way, let alone, express it in public. And if this letter was read into the hearings, why then are some of the lawmakers saying he’ll be confirmed. TELL THEM TO MAKE PALIN WORK, and come up with another choice. I’m from IL and you know what troubles we’ve had, but I have to say my family benefitted from some of our former gov. governing. And yes, he’s crooked, but not at all dumb. After this find a way to recall her. Illinois did it. Alaska can too.

  33. After this havoc (understatement), you know this will help passage of a bill to have future Alaska AG’s be elected instead of appointed by a Governor. If Ross is confirmed, he and Palin can do serious damage during the rest of her term.

Some Alaskans need to start the recall process and get Palin out of office soon.

  34. Can IRS find something to indict her with?

  35. Polly: I’m not the only one I’m sure, but I believe that the Iron Maiden has definitely committed crimes that will come to light. I don’t believe it would be possible for her to NOT commit whatever illegal acts she believes she can get away with.
Unfortunately while she is in office, her actions will remain hidden.
I also agree she is going to try & set up Alaska for secession. Understand the desire to be independent, but giving up statehood would not be good for either the Lower 48 or the citizens of Alaska.
Face it, the woman is nuts.

  36. I also believe that the Iron Maiden (being a card carrying hidden member of the AIP) is going for this:
    (sourced from Wikipedia):

    Alaska

    * Though technically not an attempt to secede from a bona fide state, in 1923, some persons in the Southeastern Division of the Territory of Alaska, headquartered at Juneau, openly agitated for a complete separation of and statehood for the Southeast. [1] This was actually in response to some comments made by President Warren G. Harding on his visit to the region.
    * The Alaskan Independence Party is a political party agitating for a repeat of the 1959 referendum admitting Alaska to the United States. Despite the successful gathering of the required signatures for a ballot initiative in 2006, the Alaska Supreme Court ruled in Kohlhaas v. State that any such secession proposal would be unconstitutional, and disallowed the measure from appearing on ballots.

  37. HofB, I understand what you are saying and there is truth in what you say.
However, W.A.R. can do a lot of damage in a short period of time.
    Be wary.

  38. Wait until he finishes his testimony in the Senate. They haven’t even gotten to the most inflammatory part.

  39. what’s the most inflammatory part????

  40. At first I thought an Alaskan secession would doom sp chance for the presidential nom. in ’12.
Then Ithought about it for a while.
She Never will come out and say she is for secession. She will let others do the dirty work and take the credit for it.

Think of the loons at fox news and michelle malkin and their tea bag revolution.
this would fit in nicely with those wide eyed rel. right conservative republicans who all of a sudden are worried about a deficit and our rights.
w.a.r fits in nicely with what is going on in the rrc republicans. they don’t care about women or children s’ rights. They don’t believe they have any. their religion tells them so. from baptists to catholics, they are a male dominated religion and want a society like that too.
sp can let her ag do the dirty work and reap the reward in ’12

  41. BonesAK: That was exactly what I was saying. You don’t appoint someone like him or let it happen simply because he’ll ruin GuvFreak. There are many many people who are not paying attention to Alaska politics. That isn’t unusual. And of course, the ADN is a political “tool” (owned by McClatchy I believe) and they are very busy giving GuvFreak political cover.
It’s simply a matter of enough people hearing and learning enough about someone to even form an opinion. People who blog, read blogs, speak vocally, contacts representatives…those people are already doing what they can.
The only way to get rid of political garbage is to make sure more voters are aware of their tricks. It’s communication with individuals who aren’t on blogs … who aren’t “political”. Those who visit here and The Flats, etc already know something is broken. The object of the game is to educate non-political individuals as to what these politicos are really like.
Getting the word to the blogs is redundant! Everyone here (‘cept the trolls) IS aware of GovFreak and her minions. But more people need to be educated. Reach out to co-workers, neighbors, friends….
Send out the legislator info to friends…tell them what’s happening.
Unfortunately although the blogs are useful, everyone here is already aware of what’s going on…you in Alaska need numbers.

  42. Very good!

The truth will set us free!

I only wish she had brought her tape recorder with her.

How nice it would be to hear those statements in his own words!

  43. @brat….just curious. Do you mayhap…go by AKBrat on ADN unfiltered?

  44. “If a guy can’t rape his wife…who’s he gonna rape?” and “There wouldn’t be an issue with domestic violence if women would learn to keep their mouths shut.”

They may both be in bad taste, but the second one is a pretty common joke. I’m pretty sure you’re taking them out of context. Unless you have something that isn’t about 90 percent certain to be kidding around to show that he was serious, using these quotes just makes you look like an idiot.

There’s plenty that makes him look like a douchebag, but I’m as certain as I am about anything that he was not advocating spousal rape.

  45. “She is the damn terminator…indestructible…”

That’s exactly why I now call her the Palinator.

  46. If anyone wants to copy this and post it to approprate threads, you are welcome to do so. Paraphrasing Ok as well, of course.

“Does it not bother any of you that Wayne Anthony Ross would be far more likely to legally represent Mike Wooten and Levi Johnston than he would Molly Heath or Bristol Palin?”

  47. […] Another woman who had been a citizen lobbyist on behalf of families and children in Alaska with regard to child support, custody, abuse, abandonment and neglect spoke before the House Judiciary Committee the following day about statements she heard at a meeting of Dads Against Discrimination. “Numerous comments were made that were appalling, not the least of which were remarks by Mr. Ross which included the following; “If a guy can’t rape his wife…who’s he gonna rape?” and “There wouldn’t be an issue with domestic violence if women would learn to keep their mouths shut.” […]
