LEGISLATING HATE: The Real Anti-Christ

It shocks me we are still talking about legislating love. I wonder why divorce hasn’t been banned to protect the sanctity of marriage…oh, that’s right…most lawmakers would have to vote to put themselves in legal jeopardy.

Recently, the whole country watched the California Supreme Court render their disappointing Proposition 8 decision banning gay marriage. Alaska takes longer to thaw out. Today, June 9th, the Anchorage Assembly will vote on a municipal ordinance to ban discrimination against gays and lesbians in hiring, housing and education.

Jobs, homes and education? Yes. It’s vulgar. I’m sick of the debate. I’m sick of Bible-waving fear mongers. I’m sick of people using Jesus as an excuse to hate.

Local super-sized Church leader, Dr. Jerry Prevo, of The Anchorage Baptist Temple, is the “not-so-Christ-like” voice of hate. His eight page press release included bullet points explaining why he is against the ordinance. The last few pages read like a porn pamphlet. His website reads like a parody. His letter to the Anchorage Daily News warned:

It would allow any man to dress like a woman and use any public women’s restroom. Ladies, do you want that to happen? If not then you should contact the Anchorage Assembly and show up at the June 9 public hearing. A man in a highly visible sales job could come to work dressed like a woman. A person of either sex who indulges a taste for extreme sexual promiscuity and pornography during working hours could not be stopped or fired even though it damages the company’s image. Maybe, worst of all, this ordinance would allow a man who teaches a second grade class or any grade to show up as a woman in the classroom and the School District could do nothing because of this ordinance.

Thou doth protest too much. How many times must we hear about closeted anti-gay preachers and politicians before we completely disregard their spiteful venom and recognize their pathology? They can’t come to terms with their secret desires so they lash out at innocent citizens with anti-gay sermons and legislation.

The list of infamy is long; there’s Ted Haggard, the mega church pastor and advisor to President Bush. He was head of the National Association of Evangelicals and was a well-known anti-gay moral crusader. Ted got caught doing meth and hiring a male prostitute. Jesus salesman, Paul Crouch, president of the Trinity Broadcasting Network, paid Enoch Lonnie Ford $425,000 in 1998 in exchange for his silence about an alleged homosexual affair they’d had in 1996.

Then there are the closeted anti-gay legislators. During his two decade + legislative tenure, former Republican Mayor of Spokane and Washington Legislator, Jim West, was quite focused. He initiated legislation to prohibit sexual contact between consenting teenagers; advocated a bill that would have banned gays and lesbians from working for schools, day cares and state agencies; voted to define marriage as a union between one man and one woman; and, when he was Senate Majority Leader, let a bill banning discrimination against gays and lesbians die in committee. When he was mayor, West promised to veto a proposition that would extend benefits to same sex domestic partners of city employees. West admitted to using a gay website and soliciting men online after being outed; he was stripped of his duties of mayor ten days later.

Homophobic Republican Senator Larry Craig voted for the anti-gay 1996 Defense of Marriage Act. That same year, he also voted against a bill outlawing employment discrimination based on sexual orientation. That bill failed by ONE VOTE! In 2007, Senator Craig was famously arrested for allegedly soliciting gay sex in a Minneapolis airport bathroom stall. Congressman Ed Schrock, a Christian Virginia Republican who regularly voted against gay rights, quit his seat when recordings began to circulate of the congressman using a telephone service to arrange gay sex. Anti-gay Arizona Republican Jim Kolbe voted for the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996. That vote inspired gay rights activists to out him. Other outed anti-gay hypocrites include Republican Congressman David Dreier-CA, and former Republican Congressmen James McCrery-LA and Mark Foley-FL. There are many others.

Thou doth protest too much, indeed.

I guess the recession is now hitting churches; hate drums up business. Prevo has worked hard to secure a tax free status for his church, his home and the homes of his employees, yet he wants to take rights away from citizens who actually pay taxes! The pastor’s fascination of men wearing womens clothing is pure fetish. Historically, Jesus wore a “dress” to work. But Prevo doesn’t base his teachings on the tolerance of Christ. He prefers cherry picking Bible 1.0, the old laws, abolished by the crucifixion.

Christianity was born out of Bible 2.0, the one about feeding the poor, healing the sick, freeing those wrongfully imprisoned and loving your neighbor as yourself. None of the miracles reported in the Bible were to make a GAY MAN STRAIGHT. None of the hungry were asked their “sexual orientation” before they were fed. Feeding the masses with 5 loaves and 2 fishes was socialism. Jesus wasn’t run over by a runaway donkey cart. He was an innocent man TORTURED AND PUT TO DEATH by the STATE at the insistence of the CHURCH! The only reported anger from Jesus was directed at a corrupt church that had turned his Father’s house into a “den of thieves.” How annoying for Jesus; He takes time out to come to Earth and save souls, and in His name, we hate one another.

Jerry Prevo told the ADN, “If I were a veteran, I’d be upset that they are linking the two together.” What the hell did our veterans fight for if it wasn’t our rights of equality? Has anyone told the preacher about “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell?” What about the men and women of other “sexual orientation” who have (and will) fight and die to protect his right to worship any way he sees fit?  The intial anti-discrimination proposal included veterans. It has since been amended and veterans are no longer on the proposed ordinance.

The Independent Baptist Church of Wasilla’s pastor, Ron Hamman, is fixated with the anti-Christ being a homosexual. His “warning” was published in The Frontiersman last week:

But will the Antichrist be a homosexual? Having seen what the Bible says of sodomy, it says, “Neither shall he [Antichrist] regard… the desire of women….” As I said at the onset, I am not the first to draw attention to this, but the verbiage is clear.
From a lost perspective, the reason sex sells, pornography is profitable, and prostitution is “the world’s oldest profession” is mankind’s desire of women. But homosexuality does not regard this — in their unbridled lusts they burn for their own gender. And at what other time have we seen such perversion come out of the closets onto our streets, threatening violence if we do not accept their ways? And will it be just a coincidence that the Antichrist will be the very first occupant of the lake of fire, tasting eternal death 1,000 years before even the devil himself?
You be the judge.

NO, Pastor Ron Hamman, not “you be the judge.” That’s the point…you are supposed to trust your Maker to be the judge. Something about “judge not, lest ye be judged” comes to mind.

So the characteristics of the anti-Christ include a lack of desire for women? Well, according to them, the real Christ didn’t desire women either. He wore a “dress” and sandals, quite possibly open toed. He hung out with a bunch of men and a former prostitute. I’m not saying Jesus was gay. I’m just saying it wouldn’t matter to me if he was; I read the red letters in the Bible. I’m quite sure, Prevo and Hamman would have denied the real Jesus rent, education, employment and basic rights. They are so focused on the Anti, they forgot the Christ.

The “unbridled lusts” Pastors Prevo and Hamman explain in such great detail scream, “I hate myself!” Their Ted Haggard-like zeal is telling.

Pastor Prevo was wrong on apartheid in the 1980’s. Was that Old Testament teaching? As much time as he spends on television, most people don’t know he starred in the reality show “Repo Man.” What would Jesus repo, Jerry?

My intolerance for the intolerant makes me one of them. I’m trying to understand how tiny their God must be to live in such fear. A God so small they will kill people themselves to terrorize. An abolition of divorce has yet to be introduced to protect the sanctity of their marriages. It’s the fault of the “homosexuals.” Really?

The separation of church and state has fallen, a casualty on the culture war battlefield.  The McChurches have frauded their tax exempt status. Political engagement, complete with voting instructions and the overt financing of political campaigns is normal practice. The Jesus Corporations are franchising fear. They preach the opposite of love; making them anti-Christ.

I grew up in the First Organic Free Range Christian Church of Homer, Alaska. I know people who walk their talk; they operate from their heart out of a place of love. The X-ians, (Christians minus Christ; think X-mas) fear all but themselves and do not understand the separation of church and state. They believe we are a Christian nation, and the pledge of allegiance is in the Old Testament somewhere. They ignore the Arlington National Cemetery gravestones marked with 38 different religious symbols; including Muslim, Hindu, Wicca, Atheist, Agnostic, or other varied faiths.  All have died protecting the right to freedoms these hate filled speakers exploit. To use their vernacular-their elitist hate is un-American.

Don’t confuse my criticism against the Christian fatwa of religious organizations with my respect for many churches or Christian people. The dangers of funding a jihadist movement against the legal reproductive choices of women or the civil rights of the GLBT community are real. People of faith can denounce the terrorist activities of such hate mongers without agreeing with the actions of their targets.

The real Anti-Christ shows up every day. It shows up in the fear, racism, homophobia, and hatred in the very people who claim they work for Christ.

Yes, Pastor Prevo. Yes, Pastor Hamman. Your actions are those of the Anti-Christ. Thou doth protest WAY TOO MUCH!

  1. Wonderful post! So sad that it’s true.

  2. I’m tired of all this. Tired of the hate. Tired of the blatant lies. Tired of the hypocrisy. Tired of people wondering if I’m a risk to kids because of who I am. Tired of “them” talking about my lifestyle. It makes me want to crawl out of my skin. It is supremely uncomfortable that my privacy is invaded every time I read a newspaper, or see TV in the company of others who don’t “know” about me. Never mind what my family might think. It’s not discussed. And I like it that way. Because there is still stigma attached, even here in the Northeast US. I’m tired of feeling like I want to shout from the rafters, but feeling like it’s fruitless. Bigots will not be changed. They are ignorant.

    I’m just tired…

  3. It isn’t Old Testament vs. New Testament. It is love vs. hate. Extremists are bad in any religion. The problem in this country is that the voice of the extremist Christian is the most likely to get heard.

Not to take away from your analysis of the hate-mongers.

  4. (((RIPLEY))) (((SHANNYN)))

    Brilliant analysis Shannyn.
Lie down Ripley and have a rest, but DON’T STAY DOWN. I saw this on Mudflats yesterday: “Hope Wins. Fear Loses” And it does! Change is coming. I get a whiff of it every now and again. SIX states voting for gay marriage! Who would have thought that a couple of years ago. Iowa?? Of all places and yet they led the vanguard. It’s coming from my children who have learned to live in a color-blind world of acceptance. And it’s hard to effect and affect change, but it does happen. This country is waking from a long long sleep. We have been so frightened that we curled up with our thumbs and blankies because reality was too much to bear. We need to push back and push back hard. The poor misguided abortion protestors stand outside Dr. Tiller’s closed clinic not knowing what to do – the object of their hate is gone and they are lost. What will happen to the haters when there is no one left to hate? THAT is their greatest fear. That’s why the fight so hard to keep hate alive because, otherwise, their lives are empty and meaningless.

  5. Something really sick has been happening in these churches. They have created a new religion that seems to have lost all the gentle teachings of the New Testament to focus on the hate-filled god of the OT. They are Christianists, just as radical fundamentalist Moslems are Islamlists. It is past time they lost their tax-exempt status. Why are we subsidizing a movement that wants to destroy our freedoms and turn us into some kind of Old Testament theocracy?

  6. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. What a wonderfully written piece. It explains so carefully the connection between hate and fear. I don’t think that the hateful see the fear – but those of us who understand need to not give up, but to continue to stand for the freedom of choice, all choice. And I too, get very tired, of being tolerant. But, to do otherwise goes against the love I feel for mankind. Please keep up the wonderful writing. There is so much good in Alaska that the bad has shone a light upon. My heart aches for what you are enduring. But the truth comes out in God’s time. We must be patient and steadfast. God’s speed. Pam

  7. As usual Shannyn…you wax poetically almost. You are so clear and so full of passion. This post brought me to tears. In. my. office……with others looming over my shoulder. No fear…they know me, and they know my anger at this type of injustice.

I will be thinking of all good alaskans today. I hope the meeting goes well and that Prevo is shown to be the bigot he his. Perhaps if he feels comfortable enough to put HIS dress and sandals on…he may see the light.

I also would like to see churches who preach hate, and who tell their parishioners how to vote, lose their tax exempt status. After all…that just makes them another wing of a political party. Hypocrites.

  8. Prevail, Shannyn.

That was a remarkable and eloquent statement.

    .

    .

I hope it moves even the raisin-hearted to change their small-minded thinking.

Oops, maybe I better reword that.

I hope it moves the less charitable among us to open their hearts and accept ALL of us for what we are.

  9. My own experience: three of the four pedophiles I came to know from growing up in a small town were Church goers. One of them was the preacher across the street.

For all of their talk of walking on a higher plane with the Lord, my experience is they struggle just as often, if not more, to lead lives of moral clarity. The Christians I know are quite willing to go into testimony on how they came to Christ in their time of emotional need. If they struggle for understanding in their own lives, should they really assume that they have a rightful perch which to cast down judgment upon the rest of us just because they chose to adopt a faith to get them by in their time of need? Their arrogance always felt like displaced compensation to me and always kept me from accepting Christ as my savior

Prevo turns off and turns away many more people than he brings in.

  10. […] LEGISLATING HATE: The Real Anti-Christ (Shannyn Moore: Just a Girl from Homer) — Shannyn’s scathing criticism of the hatred-disguised-as-Christianity of the Anchorage Baptist Temple’s Jerry Prevo and the Independent Baptist Church of Wasilla’s pastor Ron Hamman, and others of their ilk. […]

  11. Shannyn, what a great piece. I think Christianity was hi-jacked many, many, many years ago. And there are mouth pieces who think they are doing God’s work by actions I think are deployable. That is why I strongly advocate for the separation of church and state.

    Matt. 5:44-48
“But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.
“That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and the unjust.
“For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?
“And if ye salute your bretheren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?
“Be ye therefore, perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.”

    Thanks, Shannyn!

  12. Great post Shannyn!

When churches and pastors get political they should LOSE their TAX EXEMPT status.

I was raised to be homophobic, It took me quite awhile to realize that I had nothing to fear from gays and lesbians, I do have something to fear and loath from those who would discriminate. The Jerry Prevos of this world

  13. I have HAD IT. I refuse to comply with our government in ANY way until my loved ones and I are EQUAL. Taxes? Jury Duty? F-that. Not until I am treated with the SAME respect and given the SAME civil law access that others have.

We need to STOP acting UN-equal. NOW.

Here’s my personall message for the White House:

    http://gaytaxprotest.wordpress.com/2009/06/09/connect-the-dots-revised-for-obama/

  14. Thank you for stating, what should be obvious, but is mostly ignored, that the haters rely largely on old Testament doctrine.
Christ’s teachings turned those teachings on their head.

Christians who are intollerent (see the sermon on the mount) are anti-christians.

Unfortunately, they’ll never admit to it. Maybe water boarding?

  15. Last year, during the campaign, it was often said that it was going to be the most important election of our lives.

That was true, and this is but one example of the reasons why.

Now, more than ever before, church and state MUST be kept separate. Without that crucial balance, we risk becoming a theocracy based on the beliefs of a fringe minority of right-wing “Christians.”

  16. Shannyn, what do you expect? Prevo is the Jimmy Swaggart (or Ted Haggart) of Alaska and Sarah Palin is Alaska’s Tammy Faye Bakker. I wonder if they thought of running for office on the same ticket? The committee could be called CREEPP (Conservative REpublicans to Elect Prevo and Palin) Supporters could be called CREEPPS! Or, I’m a CREEP! Creepy ain’t it? (smile)

  17. I’m just tired of Prevo bullying this city every time this issue comes up. I’ve been here for all three battles. Every time the assembly does the right thing, and then Prevo finds a way to force his will on all of us. Talk about an agenda…

  18. Ok, I am a Daoist, so religion really does not enter into all this for me except that I have no idea how it feels to be raised “christian” and what christian churches teach about homosexuality.

Having acknowledged my lack of knowledge about christianity, I seriously doubt Prevo can even remotely be considered religious in ANY sense.

This is one scared human being and his weak attempts to tell us what will happen if this proposition is passed show me that he has little to no critical think skills ( or any thinking skills for that matter.)

My layman’s diagnosis: Mr. Prevo is using his “religion” to tamp down some powerful deamons and apparently many of them are of a sexual nature.

I have no problem imagining him in a S&M scenario–not that I would personally know anything about that LOL– but I find it so easy to imagine him with a seriously mean look coming out of his eyes during any kind of sex.

My woman’s instinct ( has not failed me in 65 years) tells me this man has a very dark side and is not the kind to not live it out on some level or another.

Remember: The brighter the light, the darker the shadow.

Too bad Alaska has so many citizens that seem to be “left overs” from extreme radical groups that someone like Prevo has such a foothold here.

THe man is one sick fellow.

  19. i liked stephanie miller’s name for ted haggard:
    ‘the crystal methodist’.

  20. I simply cannot believe (nor can I accept) the claims by conservatives that social issues are to be left up to the states to decide.

So you live in a state with a bunch of religious nutcases who are able to swing the vote to their twisted agenda — you’re out of luck? THAT is American?

I realize that the U.S. is still a democratic experiment in progress, but we certainly have a long, long, long way to go.

  21. considering the way the political winds have been blowing in europe lately, maybe the repubs are the ones who should move to france.

  22. Hate is hate , no matter what form it takes.

  23. Beautiful article Shannyn. It captures all of my feelings exactly.

After the gunman at the Holocaust museum today: Check out the video on Palinoscopy (http://palinoscopy.wordpress.com/). I have to give a big kudos to Shepard Smith on Fox News for calling out the extremists and talking about the hundreds of hate filled emails each day and how frightening they are. Welcome to the human race, Shepard. I don’t know how long you will remain working at Fox after this, but I can only think it would be a good thing for you to work elsewhere. I stopped watching Fox News in mid October and will never go back.

  24. Thank you Shannyn. Once again you have voiced my exact sentiments, but I don’t have your gift of writing.

A couple years ago, I watched a discussion on C-Span where they were talking of the dangers of a national fanatical religious movement such as the jihadists. They switched to USA, and compared the jihadists to the evangelical movement here and how rapidly it is growing and the dangers in it. I wish I could listen to it again, because it was like a “slap in my face” and was so what is happening that I missed much of the comments due to my shock. They have evangelical colleges to pump out lawyers and politicians and do have a big plan to get into government.

I do not mean to spread fear and hate, but this needs to be watched very closely.

We also need to stand up for our gay brothers and sisters and demand what is right.

Thank God we have people like you!

  25. Well written! I totally agree!

  26. It’s encouraging to see someone standing up and speaking the unvarnished truth. There is a lot to be said for outreach and reconciliation. But sometimes you really need to stop and tell people that what they are doing is wrong and they just need to stop it.

I’ve been reading a lot about what’s going on in Iran the past few days. It’s pretty scary what hypocrites do in the name of religion.
