Palin’s Oily Lies Drip from the Pages of Going Rogue…

I know facts aren’t going to matter to many people buying Sarah Palin’s, Going Rogue.  Facts certainly didn’t matter to folks who voted for her.

According to the “fact checkers”:

PALIN: Welcomes last year’s Supreme Court decision deciding punitive damages for victims of the nation’s largest oil spill tragedy, the Exxon Valdez disaster, stating it had taken 20 years to achieve victory. As governor, she says, she’d had the state argue in favor of the victims, and she says the court’s ruling went “in favor of the people.” Finally, she writes, Alaskans could recover some of their losses.

THE FACTS: That response is at odds with her reaction at the time to the ruling, which resolved the long-running case by reducing punitive damages for victims to $500 million from $2.5 billion. Environmentalists and plaintiffs’ lawyers decried the ruling as a slap at the victims and Palin herself said she was “extremely disappointed.” She said the justices had gutted a jury decision favoring higher damage awards, the Anchorage Daily News reported. “It’s tragic that so many Alaska fishermen and their families have had their lives put on hold waiting for this decision,” she said, noting many had died “while waiting for justice.”

When Sarah Palin was asked by Katie Couric what Supreme Court decisions other than Roe v Wade she disagreed with, she couldn’t think of one. NOT ONE!  Sarah squandered an opportunity-the perfect chance to tell America our story…an Alaskan story…dozens of suicides…thousands sick from clean up…tens of thousands bankrupt from a dead fishery.

exxonvaldez-disaster

Oiled birds from the Exxon Valdez

Sarah Palin is to Alaska what Velveeta is to cheese; sadly unsatisfying and empty of nutrition. She had the national stage to plead Alaska’s case to citizens who had long forgotten the images of a once pristine Prince William Sound turned into a thick, black, rolling sea; the oiled sea otters and birds; unrecognizable seals and whales; an initially deformed and diseased herring run that became extinct-costing Cordova $100 million a year. Exxon exploited Alaska and turned pain into profit.

AND NOW, Palin is claiming to be part of a victory for the people of Alaska? Reality Deficit Disorder…now in book form.

The Exxon Shipping Co. v. Baker Supreme Court decision in June 2008 all but pardoned Exxon’s negligence. The highest court in the land condoned the half-assed cleanup. (audio interview on the day of the ruling with Greg Palast). Exxon, the company that set and broke planet earth’s quarterly profit record three quarters in a row, was let off the hook. Because of this unprecedented landmark decision, future corporate punitive damages are now forever minimally capped at literally pennies on the dollar!

The Roberts Court based its activist ruling on 19th century maritime law.  Really! 21st century corporations can now view punitive damages as the small cost of doing business. Due to Exxon’s negligence and the corporate sympathy of the Supreme Court, one the largest acts of environmental terrorism in history was treated like an accidental littering.  The RATS-Roberts, Alito, Thomas and Scalia, (Alito recused himself, confident that Souter and Kennedy would fill the business-friendly void) winked at their corporate masters as the Judas Court betrayed Justice.

exxon-not-doneExxon doesn’t have marked offices in Alaska. There are some pretty hard feelings even 20 years later…for some pretty good reasons.  When Palin was pointing fingers at Letterman in July of this year, she did it from Houston, Texas.  She was there to sign a deal with Exxon on behalf of Alaska. The state’s willingness to do business with Exxon was like having your parents rent the basement to the guy who date raped you on prom night. Am I clear?

So Sarah was against the decision before she couldn’t remember it before she was for it.  And now, courtesy of Going Rogue, Sarah Palin manages to insult and injure Alaskans who will never be made whole with yet another one of her documented lies.

The jury originally punished Exxon with $5 billion in punitive damages-a year’s profit at the time.  In 2008, nearly 20 years later, Exxon reported the largest annual profit in US history at $45.22 billion.  The company shattered its own record set the previous year.  Would the original $5 billion in punitive damages been punishment enough?  The answer is now slowly dripping onto victims at 10 cents on the dollar.  Opening your mailbox to an Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Settlement check is like getting a royalty payment for the snuff film your kid brother was in. Hey, you’re getting paid…but he’s still dead and you got to watch.

Candidate Palin’s stunning memory lapse of Exxon v. Baker just 3 months later…

Look for Going Rogue in the revisionist history section of your local bookstore on Tuesday…

Responses

  1. Drill, baby, drill! Rogue means never having to say you’re sorry.

    • or in Sarah’s case; “Rogue means never having to tell the truth.”

  2. Cross posted elsewhere, please, Shannyn?

As usual, you cut right to the heart of the matter, and more than just Alaska blog readers need to see your essays.

  3. Progress you can believe in and be damn afraid of at the same time.

  4. Excellent piece. I trust it gets the attention it deserves.

  5. Excellent, as always. Let’s hope President Obama will have a full 8 years and can appoint more judges who will deal with 21st century issues in a modern matter, rather than reverting to ancient law that simply doesn’t apply to the here and now.

  6. Why isn’t this on HuffPo yet? Excellent overview & heartbreaking reminder of how Big Oil slimes the earth with impunity

  7. You are amazingly adept at constructing an article that is both easy to read (indeed, it’s hard NOT to read) and which explains the REAL story in a logical manner.

I so hope this receives the national attention it deserves.

  8. How many environmental groups is she a member of or officer?

Stop laughing, it was a serious question.

If she really had the people’s best interest at heart she wouldn’t totally cozy with the enery cartel.

    Shrill baby, shrill!

  9. Shannyn,

I wish Sarah Palin was Velveeta. We could put her in that little rectangular box and stick her in the back of the refrigerator until she was old and brittle. Then we could just toss her in the dumpster.

    Love your blog.

    • She is already old and brittle…this coming from someone who is older and considerably less brittle!

    • Why wait? Let’s just toss that stinky cheese into the dumpster right now!

  10. enery is how we spell energy in the lower 48. Conserves pixels you betcha!

  11. Shannyn, you write so well. You are an advocate for the state you love so well.
S’error Gover-not was put there so all you guys could meet and help spread the right message about you many issues that needed to be addressed.
Alaska will become a better state as a result of the work you,Jeanne,Linda & Gyphen and others.
Right now you are taking out the trash-SP- then let the healing begin.
May God bless all of you.

    • S’Error.

Why can I not stop giggling?

  12. I suppose you can sum up the veracity and integrity of Sarah Palin’s character with the following:
How can you tell if Sarah Palin is lying? Hint: Her lips and typing fingers are moving!
As for her vomit-inducing bastardization of both grammar and illiteration, there is only one way I would consider purchasing a copy is if the planet ran out of toilet paper.
Wasilla White Trash Go Home !!
Sorry, people of Alaska, but we REALLY don’t need her brand of stupid down here! We’re already chock full of wingnuts!!

  13. thank you Shannyn.

    I’m liking the

    Going Rouge
The Sarah Palin Rogue Coloring & Activity Book

    http://www.goingrouge.net/

  14. Scathing. And no, facts mean nothing to Palin supporters. They see themselves in her nobody-home stare, they hear themselves in her word salad of approved code-phrases, and they are content. Teabagger loyalty, whether to the words on a string they mistake for ideas, or to a hairdo, cannot be weakened by any mere fact. Facts are dots, and dots are no use at all to minds incapable of connecting them.

    Great piece.

  15. Perfect Shannyn. I appreciate you. Go get em.

  16. Keep it up, Shannyn… You’re in it for the long haul with Palin, and so many look to you to shed light on all of this.

  17. But let’s not forget that Sarah, who loves her boot-strapping, god-fearing, non-taxin, servant-heartin State so much that she actually wishes the oil companies don’t experience peak prices so the State doesn’t have to figure out how to spend our royalties. (I can’t find that tv interview where she made that ludicrous claim.)

Those pesky big-government programs, you know, that still don’t provide adequate public safety or first responders in every one of her communities?

What an idiot. And a liar of very odd choices. And an idiot.

  18. This is your best post yet! I’m hoping this is being brought to the attention of Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann?

  19. Thank you! May you have more ‘credibility’ w RWNJ’s down here since you are an Alaskan! They certainly don’t believe anyone else I know. Excellent piece.

  20. Maybe she thought Roe v Wade meant Row v Wade, as in use a boat or go barefootin in the shallow end of the sound? Yeah, that must be it.

She needs to pay someone to keep track of her lies, because no one worth being called “Governor” should ever forget a disaster of that magnitude. This brand of stupid is inexcuseable.

Thanks, Shannyn, for holding her feet to the fire, and for all the hard work you do.

  21. I remember vividly seeing the images of the wildlife coated in oil, exhausted and confused. I absolutely wept everytime I saw them. The pictures of the destruction are forever embedded in my mind.

  22. Shannyn:

GREAT radio show with Muddy tonight..You guys keep up the great work.. AND, specifically to this set of amazing lies that Palin has crafted about this Exxon deal. I am continually amazed how brazen Palin is with her outright LIES that she tells in various interviews and very few ever call her on it…WHY??? Help me understand that part….AND NOW, the mash of all mashes, Palin is calling for the Five terrorist suspects that Holder announecd would be tried in NYC to be HANDED!! I think her words EXACTLY are “Hang ’em high”…

Is this not a violation of law calling for or motivating incitement???

WHAT is up with htis lunatic??

  23. Sorry, it should be “HANGED” not HANDED”….

  24. Here’s the link..It’s already on AKM’s site as well…

    http://thinkprogress.org/2009/11/14/palin-hang-ksm/

  25. Shannyn, I’ve been reding your blog for awhile but have never posted. This is amazing, for many reasons but specifically the dreaded Grifter v. Couric interview. Could Katie have given her an easier question (besides the “what do you read question)? I had no idea. That Katie is stock full of gotcha. Wow (head is spinning). Thanks for all you do!

  26. reding= reading, argh.

  27. I live in Asia. I don’t know Alaska from jack, but your angry piece made me sad for that beautiful land and the people there who suffered as a result of the destructive Exxon-Valdez oil spill.

Though I live thousands of miles away in a different world, I share your anger at Exxon, at Sarah Palin, and at the corporate stooge supreme court judges who betrayed the principles of justice and the people they were supposed to serve.

I think it was Mark Twain who said that for news people, it wasn’t enough to just report the news, they had a duty to make people mad enough to want to do something about it. Mark Twain would be proud of your kind of reporting.

    Thanks and keep it up.

  28. Please move this writing to Huffing Post as well as to Rachel and Keith. People in the lower 48 sorely need to be educated about Palin. It is going to be interesting to see if McCain wins in his next run in AZ. I truly think Palin DID and CONTINUES to hurt him as well as their party.

  29. Oops – meant to say Huffington Post in my prior note.

  30. Thanks for this great post. It sickened me when the SCOTUS ruling came down for BIG OIL. I don’t understand these men. Don’t they have children and grandchildren? Or at least, great-nieces/nephews? Do they not care about what we are doing to the planet? I don’t understand.
As far as $P is concerned, well, no surprises at yet another lie. I have a father and a sister who lie like her. It’s like they can’t help themselves.
Thank you, and I will add my vote to post this to HuffPo.

  31. where are her cheekbones in these videos?
I just noticed there are none!!

  32. Thank you. I couldn’t have said it better!

  33. I enjoyed your show tonight with AKM, what a great twosome of talkshow hosts you both make.

Reading this post, it’s always amazing how MANY facets of that horrific spill and how much you are educating those of us in the Lwr48. Listening to that Greg Palast audio, it struck me. One of the main reasons I enjoy listening to your radio shows is that, even though you contribute to the conversation, when you have a caller or a guest that obviously knows what they’re talking about – you back off and LET them speak! Just because it’s Shannyn’s show doesn’t mean Shannyn monopolizes the conversation. THAT’s why you’re so effective in educating us interested seekers. Thx!!

  34. I swear every time I think you have topped yourself and written the best piece ever you prove me wrong by writing an ever better article. You go girl. This one is truly spot on.

  35. One of your best Shannyn. The truth will set you free! Please post at HuffPo!

    Love you girl!

  36. Shannyn, it’s a work of art. This is the most important piece I have seen about the lies in her book.

  37. I see what Palin means when she wrote that Couric badgered her. With Couric’s softball questions and her kindly voice asking, “Can you think of any others” it’s no wonder that Palin got confused. Perhaps it would have been better for Sarah if Couric gave her a hint: “What do you think about the Exxon ruling?” Or maybe Palin had expected Couric to ask her a question that actually gave her the answer: “You don’t agree with the Exxon ruling…right?” But Couric didn’t and proved that she is nothing but a meanie to poor intellectually challenged Palin!

  38. Excellent post.

I still cannot believe that people that people are expecting her run for president and will vote for her.

Even if she was nervous and blew the interview I could see that.
But to resign from the one place that would have given her experience and authenticity for a run for president….that is just sheer hubris and stupidity.

She will run as a third party candidate. She will create the perfect job for herself, whining and name calling all the way.
This third party will have no substance, just a reactionary party against perceived slights and made up horrors.
So instead of looking at and trying to solve real problems, they will sling mud without having to deal with the aftermath.

  39. I happened to be in Juneau the day that horrible tragedy occured and spent a good deal of my time watching TV news coverage of those events. It doesn’t surprise me that Ms. Palin has waffled or forgotten what she said or stands for. she is after the almighty dollar, and I think she hopes that her book will help her in a run for another government office. God help us all if she is elected to ANY office, because as she has already proven when the going gets tough, she bails out and leaves.

  40. This needs to be posted in the St Petersburg Times and all major newspapers in Florida. There has been continuous talks about drilling off the coast for years but no one has ever been exposed to this great issue. Although I remember reading about it and seeing horrible pictures when it happened, we never heard the details of the settlement and the after affect. Floridians should see your article. Thank you, Shannon, and please forward it to huffpo.

    • Look up the ongoing off shore oil spill outside of Australia, media hasn’t touched it in this country that I know of…new rig, new spill responses and not able to stop the leaking from 8000 ft. below the sea floor, Indonesian islands threatened…rally around alternatives, any kind of fossil fuel development is deadly for our planet, and HEY, IT’S THE ONLY ONE WE HAVE!!! (maybe too late already…) these right to lifers don’t seem to include anything but unborn fetuses…while the rest of life is open for exploitation, and elimination, through greed.

  41. Shannyn,
You should be writing for a major media outlet. I enjoy your articles because they state the facts without the spin, revealing the real Palin. The MSM, in my opinion, is the largest purveyor of censorship in this country. It has to be this or its reporters are intellectual sloths. I’ve noticed for some time the way the MSM no longer does factual reporting and cherry-picks the information it reports. It’s people like you who are the real journalists nowadays. The MSM often does not bother itself to do investigative reporting anymore. The closest thing resembling news that results from investigative journalism these days is Rachel Maddow’s show. Keith Olbermann also seems to have a competent staff of researchers, but he does not delve into the issues at the level that you and RM do.
Why the MSM has a problem reporting the news, I can only guess. It may be that the editors lean a certain way politically and restrict information on that basis (NYT), or maybe they’ve been threatened by some bigwig politician, but what I do know is that it’s all about sensationalism, ratings and profit. If the MSM would do its job, a lot of these shady, dishonest characters would not be a blip on the public radar screen. Keep up the good work, Shannyn, and I hope your career continues to advance upward. Thanks for keeping it real.

  42. The Velveeta Cheese analogy was pretty funny-

  43. […] Shannyn Moore: Just a Girl from Homer – One of the plaintiffs in the Exxon Valdez oil spill case, she notes, “So Sarah was against the decision before she couldn’t remember it before she was for it. And now, courtesy of Going Rogue, Sarah Palin manages to insult and injure Alaskans who will never be made whole with yet another one of her documented lies.” Videos included. […]

  44. It’s puzzling how any individual could believe even one thing that Sarah writes or verbalizes. Sarah seems to be incapable of telling the truth.

Given that the AP and other news sources, bloggers, too, started fact checking “Going Rogue” unsurprisingly found many many inconsistencies and discrepancies, has not deterred Sarah’s followers, who seem to be blinded by their loyalty to a woman blinded by her ambitions, remain fiercely devoted to Sarah is unsettling.

They are locked-in a reality of their own design where logic, common sense nor reason exist. Any source (liberal or conservative) that dare contradict or diminish Sarah in any way will be admonished. It is easier to dismiss inconvenient facts as lies or attacks than try to explain a discrepancy that cannot be explained. God forbid they should have to admit their Sarah is imperfect.

But for Sarah, the name of the game is winning. Whatever it takes, whatever the costs whether going after mentors, friends and foes alike with a vengeance or twisting the truth, lying, playing the victim, Sarah does it with unnatural ease. Claiming victory is really all she wants, the prize is of little consequence notwithstanding. Once Sarah realizes it involves doing something she does not like, simply quits, moves on to the next conquest and never looks back.

While it is premature to know whether “Going Rogue” will be the straw that breaks the camel’s back, the people mentioned in her book aren’t going to take kindly to being falsely accused of doing or saying something they did not do or say. The media may turn it into a she said/he said, as they are wont to do, but … even so, Sarah will soon discover that biting the hand that fed her bit off more than she can chew.

Those who sacrifice truth for ambition, facts for make believe and relationships for victory eventually understand what it means to lose:

Victory without truth cannot be won.

  45. That was an amazingly written, heartfelt piece of work. I, too, remember watching the news and seeing the destruction that was so devastating even watching it from a distance.

I’d pitch in to see this published and handed out all over the country to everyone would read it.

  46. Nice piece. I was simly searching ‘palin lies’ because of a teaser of her latest interview. She was asked if she knew of her daughters pregnancy at a certain point and Palin responded with a nod and a verbal “newwwwww” …. both consistant with signs of untruth. So I thought i’d do a search. I do not care for our political structure any more…too much profit motive with such an unscrupulous lobby embedded in Washington. Like the insurance companies spending billions trying to convince the American public that we need a middleman to keep health care costs down. We, the working backbone of this nation, pay plenty in taxes to provide healthcare. .Two simple rules would change the two-faced nature of todays political arena…..Make any means of buying political favor an act of treason by both the politician and the lobbyist. no more back room lobbying. Rule#2 limit campaign contributions to 100.00 per entity. period. with that done, how many of the super wealthy would “hear the calling to serve” and run?

  47. […] Palin’s Oily Lies Drip from the Pages of Going Rogue… I know facts aren’t going to matter to many people buying Sarah Palin’s, Going Rogue.  Facts certainly didn’t […] […]

  48. Shannyn, excellent piece. My Going Rouge is still in the mail, but will totaly comment and link back to your blog with quotes, etc. Can’t wait, read the ak dispatch excerpt. Is it true, can we only hope to Palin’s God that she gets the 2012 nomination!? Will that really be the end of the GOP?

  49. Shannyn, hate to say this, but you owe Kraft, the makers of Velveeta, an apology …. 🙂

  50. great post as usual .. thanks .. you just gave me a few more ideas to play with
